HBO confirmed their casting for Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley for their new ‘Harry Potter series’. The channel unveiled the three child actors who will be playing the infamous trio on Tuesday.
With HBO launching an open casting call for the casting of the trio, more than 30,000 child actors and kids auditioned for the lead roles. The meticulous search now led to Dominic McLaughlin playing Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton for Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout for Ron Weasley.
“After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione and Ron. The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It’s been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there,” said showrunner Francessca Gardiner and Mark Mylod who is the executive producer and director.
Every kid who grew up in the early 2000s couldn’t have escaped the magic conjured by the Harry Potter series that had 8 films and 3 more Fantastic Beasts movies. Daniel Radcliffe cemented the role of Harry Potter while Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were the ones who gave life to the beloved fictional characters.

Fans of the magical world have already shared their doubts and bluntly the need for a Harry Potter series, with the commentary growing louder with the deviating casting of the elderly characters.
The casting of Paapa Essideu for the role of Severus Snape was debated as the ardent fans validly questioned the physical difference from the book to the series adaptation bringing irrelevance to the casting table. Now that HBO revealed the much awaited child actors taking the leading roles, the conversation yet again brought back the questions.
HBO in an earlier statement said that the Harry Potter series, not yet the confirmed title, is “a faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter books”. The casting certainly begs to differ from the statement as Severus Snape is known for his pitch black hair in contrast to his pale skin.
The kids all look their part and the classic Harry Potter Trio poster revealing the original cast announcement is a wholesome call back. While the internet now got the prominent casting including the trio, they are not holding back from criticising the casting couch.
One fan wrote, “Other than Snape it’s not a bad casting” while others seem to agree with him as another person commented, “this honestly would be the most perfect cast ever if it weren’t for the horrible miscast of snape😭”. One internet user responded “While I don’t think the cast will sit right with Harry Potter fans, it will be the new generation they will be targeting. If they do it right, I don’t think it will matter much, but they do have a habit of not doing it right, so we will have to see.”
Apart from the obvious miscast of Severus Snape which has no disadvantage with Paapa Essdeu’s skill or filmography, the cast looks solid and could bring more to the fandom that is missed out of the movie franchise in terms of facts and layers.
Domini McLaughlin, the new Harry Potter, acted in ‘Grow’, an upcoming comedy on Sky while Arabella Stanton acted as Matilda in ‘Matilda: The Musical’ on the West End. Alastair Stout booked his first major role in the Harry Potter series.
The series will be streamed in HBO or HBO Max or MAX, a stint yet to be confirmed. The filming of the series will be starting from summer 2026 with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros joining as producers. Author JK Rowling is executive producing along with Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films.
