Elon Musk’s Satellite company Starlink has received the green signal for license from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The license greets the path for commercial operations in India, now entering the South Asian market.
Starlink has received the license for GMPCS (Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite) services, VSAT services and ISP Category -A unified license. The GMPCS services will ensure seamless worldwide connectivity through satellite telecommunication that provides services in the entire area of operation, especially in remote and unreached areas.
According to the Department of Telecommunication, “GMPCS enables mobile communication services via satellite for users, especially in those regions where terrestrial networks’ connectivity is limited”, reports ANI.

Starlink becomes the third company after Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite to get the unified license in India. Fourth applicant in line – Amazon’s Kuiper is awaiting approval for operation.
An anonymous source reporting to Reuters said that Musk met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his US visit in February and discussed the agenda and launch of Starlink in India. The two had talks on the concerns over security in launching Starlink.
Elon Musk’s company has been awaiting an approval since 2022 to launch in India while this license approval is a key progress, the launch and commercialisation will be a long way. Another unnamed source told Reuters that “(Starlink) still needs a separate licence from India’s space regulator, which Starlink is close to securing”.
While Starlink in a surprise move got the support of Jio and Bharti Airtel in announcing a partnership to stock Starlink in their retail stores, the debate on broadband services still has trouble between Musk and Ambani.
