‘Kerala’s Fidel Castro’ VS Achuthanadhan passed away at 101: Former Chief Minister of Kerala to get cremated on 23 July

An end of an era in Kerala Politics as VS Achuthanadhan, known for his inspiring sharp speeches and decisive governance is no more.

Former Chief Minister of Kerala VS Achuthanadhan passed away at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday. The former Chief Minister passed away after having a heart attack and age-related issues and he was 101.

VS Achuthanadhan known for his iron-fisted communism ideologies and orator ship. The veteran politician was also a freedom fighter, carved a way for himself in Kerala politics, serving as the Chief Minister from 2006 – 2011.

Infamously called by his followers as VS, Velikkakathu Sankaran Achuthanadhan has been a crucial part in Kerala Politics with his stubborn voice against corruption and voicing for common people’s rights. Drives against other state lotteries and film piracy were the other highlights of VS ‘government.

With his demise, here ends a true era as VS Achthanadhan is the lone survivor of the one of the 32 members who walked out of the Communist party of India National council meeting in 1969, citing difference of ideologies and started the Communist Party of India.

Known to be a stern disciplinarian, VS has always been vocal publicly about anti-corruption thoughts and anti-ecological opinions. His voice against the encroachments and the illegal constructions in the ecological sites in Munnar and his stance against the illegal sandal lobbies are some of the reflection of his ideologies.

His infamous verbal political front and back with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who commented on VS’s age has backfired with Achuthanadhan commenting Gandhi as ‘Amul Baby’ reaching new national heights.

The unapologetic leader’s demise has been devastating news for the Kerala public and a great loss for the political climate in general. VS Achuthanadhan has left a practical example of an honourable politician with a stealthy voice. His cremation will be held with complete state honours on 23 July 2025.
