Akshay Kumar issues Health and Accident Coverage to 650 Stunt Artists

Actor Akshay Kumar has extended his support and help to the Stunt Workers in the cinema industry by providing their health and accident insurance.

Indian Cinema in all its glory functions mainly on its commercial films, which have some of the most risky stunts in the world. Such a risky job is often overlooked while now fans will be surprised to learn that actor अक्षय कुमार has been providing health and accident coverage for 650 stunt men across India from 2017.

This powerful and thoughtful move has turned heads also gaining respect for the actor who personally has issued the health and accident insurance for 650 stunt workers in the cinema industry.

This news is highlighted right on time of the unfortunate death of Stuntman S M Raju, who was working in a Tamil film ‘Vettuvam’ directed by Pa Ranjith and stars actor Arya. The accident caught on camera has surfaced in social media, creating controversy for the safety of the Stuntmen and people involved in such risky sequences.

The Indian Film Industry is one of the wealthiest and most well-known in the world and yet a major part of the film making, creating risky stunts is overlooked and not well organized. Many stunt men put their lives at risk, doing unworldly choreographs everyday for the sake of entertainment while most of them have little to no insurance.

The families of stuntmen are also in constant worry and what Akshay Kumar has done is not just a financial support but also sheds light on their sacrifices and valour in making cinema. While several fields in the film industry are honoured, it is only as late as 2016 when a National Award for Best Stunt Choreography was issued in India.

Akshay Kumar is reportedly covering around 650-700 stuntmen’s insurance coverage says Vikram Singh Dahiya, a seasoned stunt artist who has worked in films such as Dhadak 2, Jigra, Gunjan Saxena, Antim, and OMG 2.

“Thanks to Akshay sir, around 650 to 700 stuntmen and action crew members in Bollywood are now covered under insurance,” Dahiya shared and added, “The policy includes both health and accident coverage. If a stunt performer is injured, whether on or off set, they can avail of cashless medical treatment up to Rs 5 to Rs 5.5 lakh.”

Akshay Kumar is reportedly paying a premium of 6 crore every year since the launch of the initiative in 2017, setting benchmark and principles for actors and fellow members of the film industry to notice and follow.
