Atlassian Fires 150 Workers as AI Takes Over Jobs

Atlassian's latest layoffs highlight the growing impact of AI on traditional jobs, sparking concerns over worker rights, reskilling, and corporate responsibility.

Tech company Atlassian has fired 150 employees as it moves more work to Artificial Intelligence (AI). The announcement was made in a pre-recorded video by CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes. The affected employees worked in customer service and support roles.

Atlassian said it had to “restructure” these teams because many of their tasks can now be handled by AI tools. This decision upset many workers, as they found out about their job loss through email and had their laptops blocked immediately.

On the same day, Atlassian’s co-founder Scott Farquhar spoke at the National Press Club, promoting the benefits of AI. He said that people should “let go of jobs from the past” and should learn new skills for the future. He also mentioned that Australia has a good social safety net to help people during such changes.

Atlassian claims that the job cuts are not just about AI but also about making teams focus on high-impact areas like automation. The company plans to hire more people in AI engineering and product development.

This trend is not new. Other companies like Dropbox and IBM have also cut jobs to invest more in AI. Businesses are now rethinking how teams work as machines can do many manual tasks faster.

Unions in Australia have raised concerns about the impact of AI on workers. They are asking for stronger rules to protect jobs and ensure companies consult employees before using new technologies.

As AI continues to grow, the big question is: How will businesses and workers adapt to this new reality?
