BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw handed over to India after being in Pakistan Custody from April 2025

BSF Constable Puranm Kumar Shaw who was under Pakistan’s custody from 23 April 2025 was returned to India in Amritsar.

Border Security Force (BSF) constable Purnam Kumar Shaw was handed over to India after being held in custody by Pakistan for 22 days, reports Force. Detained by Pakistan border officials from 23 April, constable Purnam Kumar Shaw was taken under custody after inadvertently crossing the territory during duty on 23 April around at 11.30 PM.

On Wednesday, BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw was handed over at the Joint Check Post Attari, Amritsar at 10.30 AM. “Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw had inadvertently crossed over to Pakistan territory, while on operational duty in area of Ferozepur sector on 23rd April 2025 around 1150 hrs and detained by Pak Rangers”, reports the Border Security Force in their statement.

It is also revealed that constant flag meetings attended by Pakistan rangers with the BSF officers to discuss the release of Purnam Kumar Shaw, then intervened by the cross border firing between the countries during ‘Operation Sindoor’ lead to communication between them ceasing.

The repatriation was achieved through different communication channels and the safe return of the BSF Jawan to India. Shaw hails from West Bengal’s Hooghly who was posted in the Punjab border region since 10 April and wandered accidentally into the neighbouring border.

The family of Purnam Kumar Shaw have in the past days been constantly appealing to the Central government and the BSF officers to initiate the release of Shaw which is said to go ‘unanswered’. Wife of the BSF Jawan, Rajani Shaw spoke to Times Of India last week, revealing her plight saying, “Neither the BSF officers nor central government officials responded to our appeals.”
