The 19-year old Women Grand Master from India clinched the FIDE Women’s World Cup 2025 title on Monday, facing fellow WGM Koneru Humpy and soaring through the tense match. Although India was guaranteed of a champion, the game between the seasoned Humpy and the prodigy was an anticipated one.
Divya Deshmukh signed off the astonishing win against Koneru Humpy by saying it is a ‘fate’ as the current FIDE World Champion pushed through the second game of the Rapid game that ended up in a tense rook endgame.
“I need time to process it. I think it was fate, me getting the Grandmaster title this way. Because before this, I didn’t even have one norm, and before this tournament, I was thinking ‘Oh, where can I get my norm’ and now I’m a Grandmaster,” said Divya in an interview with FIDE right after clinching the title.
The Rapid game which began with the tie-break two draws, looked to be leading to another stalemate. Humpy strung tight with the time pressure made some blunders, vitally used by Divya who looked composed and stealthily found her way around the checkered board to become India’s 88th Grandmaster.
Although ended up on the winning side and ultimately winning the summit event, Divya was matured in understanding her game against the 38 year old World Cup runner, Divya said, “I definitely need to learn endgames. I’m pretty sure at some point I messed it up. I’m not sure how. It should have been an easy win. I think I should not allow g4. But I think maybe I should just go rook a3, rook f3, rook g3, and that should be a win.”
