Austrian extreme sport practitioner and the record holder of the infamous supersonic dive from the edge of space, Felix Baumgartner, 56, was killed in Italy during a paragliding accident.

The extreme sports pioneer was killed in a paragliding accident while flying over Porto Sant’Elpidio in Italy’s central Marche region, where he might have faced a technical malfunction mid-dive and fell into a nearby hotel pool. The impact killed Felix and injured a hotel guest, who is recovering.

While Porto Sant’Elpidio’s mayor, Massimiliano Ciarpella said that Felix said that “he may have suffered a sudden medical issue mid-air”. He also offered the town’s condolences for Felix’s death by posting, “ “Our community is deeply affected by the tragic disappearance of Felix Baumgartner, a figure of global prominence, a symbol of courage and passion for extreme flight”

Felix made global headlines in 2012 when he became the first man to break the sound barrier by jumping from a balloon 24 miles above the earth’s atmosphere. “When I was standing there on top of the world, you become so humble, you do not think about breaking records anymore, you do not think about gaining scientific data. The only thing you want is to come back alive,” he said after landing in the eastern New Mexico desert.

Apart from the remarkable jump, Felix has had historic achievements like the jump over Roswell, New Mexico, reaching a peak speed of over 833 mph , on the 65th anniversary of legendary American pilot Chuck Yeager’s flight shattering the sound barrier on October 14, 1947.

In his own country, Felix was known to be a controversial personality as his personal views and opinions on dictatorship being a supportive system of government.
