India Slams U.S. Double Standards on Russia Trade; Trump Says He “Doesn’t Know”

In a sharp diplomatic exchange, India has called out the United States for what it termed “hypocrisy” over trade ties with Russia—after former U.S. President Donald Trump criticised India for continuing oil imports from Moscow.

India’s strong response came after Trump announced intentions to increase tariffs on India, claiming New Delhi was “profiting” from discounted Russian crude. However, when asked about the U.S. itself continuing to import Russian fertilizers, chemicals, and nuclear fuel, Trump simply said:

“I don’t know anything about it. I’d have to check.”

India Hits Back

India’s Ministry of External Affairs responded swiftly, accusing the West of preaching one thing and practicing another. Officials pointed to the fact that while the U.S. and EU continue to buy Russian goods essential to their industrial sectors, they target India for decisions rooted in energy security.

Indian oil imports from Russia have surged since 2022, primarily due to the economic advantage they offer in global markets. But experts argue that India has not violated any sanctions and is making strategic decisions based on national interest.

The issue has reignited the debate over Western double standards, especially when it comes to Global South nations. On Indian social media, many users highlighted how the U.S. continues to import uranium hexafluoride and palladium from Russia—yet questions India’s trade logic.
