The India tour of England is the talk of the town. A new era of captaincy takes off today with the young Shubman Gill taking on the task of leading the team in the long format. Gill will be getting a first hand experience on captaining the side, that too in England, a task that has only been achieved by 3 other Indian captains so far.
Saying it as an Herculean task is no understatement as surprisingly the English grounds in Test formats have only been conquered thrice under three different captains. This peculiarity comes from players struggling to make a mark in the away games, either pulled back by the harsh bowling pitches like the infamous Lord’s slope, Headingley, Old Trafford among others post trouble for the bowlers. This 2025 Test series also subsequently kicks off the WTC Test cycle 2025 – 27.
The Indian side has been touring England since 1932 and have managed to win only three Test series against the English. While conditions play a major part, losses and the stats put a dent on the Asian squad’s mentality too.

Here are the 3 Indian Captains who have won a Test Series in England
Ajit Wadekar: 1-0 (1971)
The first Indian skipper who punctured a victory for the Indian side in the England soil is Captain Ajit Wadekar. The ruptured record continued with the Asian team not having big hopes in 1971, yet gave their best to make up with two draws in the first two matches.
The matches at Lord’s and Manchester were drawn and the third test at the Oval had the spectacular showcase of bowling from Bhagwat Chandrasekhar, who took 6 wickets, leading India to the first ever historic test win in England.
Kapil Dev: 2-0 (1986)
Fresh off another historic win, the 1983 World Cup victory, Kapil Dev led the team with his reliance and composure, taking on continuous wins at Lord’s and Headingley, having the upper hand and drawing the third. A stunning display of batting and bowling combined to secure India’s second win in England, that came after 15 years.
Rahul Dravid: 1-0 (2007)
The start of a new millennium brought in a new superstar side with Rahul Dravid leading the bunch. Players like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly were pushing the team to new limits. The England tour was approached in such a clinical way that the all around performance of the team brought in the win for 1-0 with two draws.
