Karnataka Government brings back caps for Movie Ticket Prices to Rs 200 effective immediately

A price cap of Rs 200 has been brought back by the Karnataka Government and is mandatory for Multiplexes and standalone theatres.

The Karnataka Government has once again capped the prices of Movie tickets as mentioned in the state budget. The announcement was confirmed by a government order issued on Tuesday where the price cap for movie tickets was Rs 200 or less.

Under Rule 55 of Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 2014, the capping of movie ticket prices to Rs 200 has been implemented and now has been amended to be added in the new sub-rule. The sub-rule number six states that the cost of the ticket of each show in all theatres of the state, including multiplexes, for all language films should not exceed Rs 200, inclusive of entertainment tax.

The State budget decided and announced by CM Siddaramaiah in March states that the movie ticket prices should be capped to Rs 200 in multiplexes, for regional language films. The proposal was backed by Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce and the Karnataka Film Exhibitors Association as an effort to get better footfalls.

While the prior 2017 capping under CM Siddaramaiah rule was ignored by Multiplexes who shared their concerns of losing revenue and thus approached the Karnataka court to appeal for revamping the rule. The price cap was subsequently lifted leaving theatre owners to set their own prices.
