Muharram, is the first month which is regarded as the sacred one in theIslamic calendar and the word ‘haram’ refers to the meaning of forbidden orsacred. Based on the available historical information and research the peopleare forbidden to wage war or fight with each other during this auspiciousmonth. And this month kicked off on 26 June 2025 and the most importantfestival called “Ashura” will be observed on 6 July 2025.
Significance of Muharram & Ashura
● Since, Muharram is the first month of Islamic calendar it iscommemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca Madina
● The Sunni Muslims believe that fasting tradition was encouraged duringthe day of Ashura by Prophet Muhammad.
● The Shia Muslims, will mourn to honor the martyrdom Imam Hussain on the day of Ashura.
● Imam Hussain is the grandson of the Prophet and he was killed at thebattle of Karbala in 680 CE.
● Fasting, gatherings, reciting of prayers, elegies and processions will befollowed on the 10th day of Muharram.
In India, Ashura will be followed on 6 July 2025. Since it falls on Sunday all the official government offices, and banks will be closed for it is being announced a gazetted public holiday. Fortunately, it falls on Sunday so there will be no additional compensatory working day for this.
