Virat Kohli announces Test Format Retirement – Highlights and Legacy of ‘Run Machine’

Indian cricketer Virat Kohli signs off his Test Career, confirms his decision after 14 years long run, dominating and owning the format.

Legendary Indian Cricketer Virat Kohli announces retirement from his successful Test Career after writing history, dominating and showcasing ultimate skill in the long format. The news comes after BCCI mulled over discussions and several debates on Virat stepping down a few days ago.

Virat Kohli, ranked No. 1 Batsman in the longer format once has certainly ploughed a name for himself also withstanding numerous trials and tribulations. Known to channel his passionate and dynamite rage on field into the slower and longer formats, inevitably uplifting the team’s spirit in the last decade, Kohli’s decision of stepping down from the format leaves fans with a great legacy to hold and celebrate.

Announcing his decision to the world over an Instagram post that read, “It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life.

There’s something deeply personal about playing in whites. The quiet grind, the long days, the small moments that no one sees but that stay with you forever.

As I step away from this format, it’s not easy — but it feels right. I’ve given it everything I had, and it’s given me back so much more than I could’ve hoped for.

I’m walking away with a heart full of gratitude — for the game, for the people I shared the field with, and for every single person who made me feel seen along the way.

I’ll always look back at my Test career with a smile.

#269, signing off.”

Kohli debuted at Kingston against West Indies in 2011, has surged 9230 runs with 300 centuries and 31 fifties contributing majorly and maintaining an average of 46.85. The majority of these runs were scored by Virat during the 2016 – 2019 season that reaped 16 centuries and 4,208 runs in just 69 innings.

Virat’s decision comes closely following his fellow Indian Skipper Rohit Sharma who also announced his retirement in the longer format. Team India will be facing England at Headingley for a Five Test series from 20 June 2025 that also kicks off the next cycle of ICC World Test Championship.

A cherished run in Test format, Virat’s contribution and revolutionising the format with electric performances and showcasing remarkable inning including his 254* vs SA in Pune that cemented a monumental win for India.

The player is also always known for his ceaseless drive, especially chasing grand total and heroic form that was shadowed with legends like Sachin who he shares several records like his century in Edgbaston.

Owning the legacy of one of the most successful Test Captains in terms of wins who has capped India, Virat led 68 Test series for the country and lost just 17, a record that can only be hoped to be summoned by a true talent from the futures slots.
