Wankhede Stadium is not just any other place for cricketing and other events but also has बीसीसीआई Official merchandise stores in the stadium. In a strange case of heist, one of the stadium’s security guards stole 261 आईपीएल Jerseys from the store and sold it outside for his personal profit.
The jerseys worth ₹6.5 lakh, each costing ₹ 2500 were missing from the storeroom at the BCCI office in the stadium. The theft came to light during an audit and in checking the CCTV footage, it was revealed that a guard named Farooque Aslam Khan swindled a package containing the 261 jerseys.
The alleged theft was recorded on 13 June but was only furthered after a formal complaint by the authorities on 17 June. An FIR was filed at the Marine Drive police under Section 306 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and investigation proceeded.
The arrested guard Farooque sold the jerseys to an online dealer in Haryana and has spent the earnings from the trade to his gambling addictions, the police said. He got in touch with the dealer through social media and sold all the units to the dealer who told the police that he was not aware that they were stolen.
The jerseys were dispatched through courier. “The guard claims he haggled a bit with the online dealer, but he hasn’t yet specified how much he got for the deal.”
