Why is #BoycottSitaareZameenPar Trending? Trailer Gets Backlash

Actor Aamir Khan is no stranger to ‘Boycott’ as his last film ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ received severe backlash and went on to become a disastrous flop.

Aamir Khan’s comeback movie ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ is now receiving severe backlash and online hate after the Trailer of the movie released on Tuesday. The movie has now found itself tangled in political mess as fans and netizens connects Aamir Khan’s promotional visits to a foreign nation with #BoycottSitaareZameenPar trending on X.

Directed by R Prasanna, ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ is produced by Aamir Khan Productions as the actor’s past visit to Turkey for promoting his film ‘Secret Superstar’, directed by Advait Chandhan. Aamir’s visit to Turkey in 2017 when he met the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and during his visit in 2020 during the shoot of ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, also directed by Chandhan where he visited the First Lady Emine Erdogan are now the middle of the controversy.

The netizens are drawing a string with his visit to Turkey and the involvement of Turkish artillery and drones supplied to Pakistan during the tumultuous ‘Operation Sindoor’ attack that killed numerous civilian lives in Indian borders. The neutralised parts of drones and other Pakistan military ammunitions are recognised to be from Turkey, indicating Ankara’s support to Islamabad in backing the Pahalgam Terrorist attack.

Aamir’s polite visits with the Turkish leader and his established fanbase in Turkey has now bled into Indian netizens boycotting his upcoming movie. After nearly 3 years, Aamir Khan is returning to the big screen as a lead with ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’, which is the spiritual sequel of his 2007 film ‘Taare Zameen Par’.

Aamir’s last release was also boycotted with the majority of the fans questioning the need for a remake that wasn’t striking with the Indian audience as the original Hollywood movie ‘Forrest Gump’ starring Tom Hanks is considered one of the cult dramas. Aamir’s sentiment towards nationalism and patriotism during the Pahalgam attack and the furthered ‘Operation Sindoor’ was clear as the actor through his production company reflected, “Saluting the heroes of Operation Sindoor” and shared his gratitude for the armed forces and PM of India.

‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ is also a remake of the Spanish language film ‘Champions’ that is about the story of an arrogant and drunkard coach of a basketball team who is given community service for his road accident to coach a team of basketball players with intellectual disabilities. Fans are also complaining that the trailer cut of the movie is exactly as the 2018 movie, igniting further heat.
