The Jammu to Srinagar Vande Bharat route has finally turned one of India’s most talked-about rail dreams into a daily travel option. For passengers, pilgrims, students, traders and tourists, this is not just another train launch. It cuts a tough mountain journey to about 4 hours and 50 minutes, connects Jammu Tawi directly with Srinagar, and brings Kashmir’s rail map closer to the national high-speed network.Â
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the extended service on April 30, 2026, while regular commercial runs begin from May 2, 2026. The big highlight is simple: Jammu to Srinagar in nearly 5 hours, without the earlier break at Katra.
What Has Changed On The Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Route?
Earlier, the Vande Bharat service ran between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar. The new extension takes it up to Jammu Tawi, making the journey far easier for passengers arriving from Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and other northern states. According to official railway communication, the service has also been upgraded from 8 coaches to 20 coaches to handle higher demand. This makes the train more useful during summer tourism, Vaishno Devi rush, Amarnath Yatra season and winter travel to Kashmir. RailMinIndia X post on the Jammu extension and 20-coach upgrade.
Timings, Train Numbers And Stops Passengers Should Know
The route will have 4 Vande Bharat services, counted as 2 pairs: 26401/26402 and 26404/26403. The main stops are Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi and Banihal. Train 26401 leaves Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM and reaches Srinagar at 11:10 AM. Train 26403 departs Jammu Tawi at 1:20 PM and reaches Srinagar at 6:00 PM. From Srinagar, train 26404 leaves at 8:00 AM and arrives at Jammu Tawi at 12:40 PM, while 26402 leaves Srinagar at 2:00 PM and reaches Jammu Tawi at 6:50 PM.
Why The 5-Hour Journey Is Trending
The 5-hour promise is trending because road journeys on this belt are often affected by weather, landslides, traffic blocks and tourist-season pressure. A direct electric train creates a cleaner, faster and more predictable option for Kashmir travel. It also gives social media a strong visual story: a modern train crossing mountains, tunnels, bridges and snow-linked landscapes on one of India’s most dramatic rail stretches.

Why This Train Is Big For Tourism And Pilgrimage
This route can change weekend and short-trip planning. Pilgrims going to Vaishno Devi can now link Jammu, Katra and Srinagar more smoothly. Tourists can land or arrive at Jammu, board the Vande Bharat, and reach Srinagar before lunch or evening, depending on the service chosen. For hotels, taxi operators, homestays, guides and local markets, faster movement may bring higher footfall across both Jammu and Kashmir regions.
What Makes This Vande Bharat Route Special?
The service runs through the USBRL corridor, one of India’s toughest railway projects. The route includes headline infrastructure such as the Chenab Bridge and Anji Khad Bridge inspection corridor mentioned by PIB. Inside the train, passengers get AC Chair Car and Executive Chair Car options, modern seating, faster acceleration and better ride quality.
For Kashmir, this is also symbolic. It gives the Valley a stronger rail link, not only for tourism but also for local mobility, trade, education, medical travel, army families, exam travel, business visits and safer inter-city movement. For many families, Jammu to Srinagar in 5 hours is the update they were waiting for. Passengers should still confirm seats, fares and platform details before travelling online.
