India has widened the route map for foreign travellers using electronic visas. On August 10, 2026, the Ministry of Home Affairs notified 11 additional international entry points, including Attari Road on the India-Pakistan border. The change is useful, but one condition stands out: Attari becoming an e-Visa checkpoint does not make Pakistani passport holders eligible for an Indian e-Visa.
The expansion takes India’s e-Visa entry network to 88 ports. Tourists, business visitors, medical travellers and other eligible foreign nationals now have more arrival choices beyond major airports.
Which 11 New Ports Can E-Visa Travellers Use?
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs announcement published by the Press Information Bureau, the additions comprise nine land ports and two airports. India now permits e-Visa entry through 37 airports, 38 seaports and 13 land ports. The government also says around 95% of e-Visa applications are processed within 72 hours.
The newly authorised points are:
- Attari Road, Punjab: Land entry point on the India-Pakistan border.
- Agartala, Tripura: Important gateway on the India-Bangladesh border.
- Darranga, Assam: Border entry point in India’s North-East.
- Gede, West Bengal: Land connection on the Bangladesh-facing eastern corridor.
- Ghojadanga, West Bengal: Another India-Bangladesh immigration route.
- Haridaspur: Newly approved for e-Visa arrivals.
- Jaigaon, West Bengal: Major gateway on the India-Bhutan frontier.
- Dawki, Meghalaya: Road crossing used on the Bangladesh route.
- Moreh, Manipur: India’s key land gateway towards Myanmar.
- Bhopal Airport, Madhya Pradesh: New airport option for eligible e-Visa arrivals.
- Tirupati Airport, Andhra Pradesh: Added for travellers arriving directly by air.
The official PIB Home Affairs release carries the updated list. PIB India also posted the announcement through its official X account, giving travellers a government social-media source for the change.
Who Can Enter India Through These New E-Visa Points?
The new ports are for foreign nationals who qualify for an Indian e-Visa and hold valid Electronic Travel Authorisation. The government says the facility is available to nationals of 172 countries. India introduced e-Visas in 2014 for nationals of 43 countries, showing how widely the programme has grown.
Permitted purposes include tourism, business, medical treatment, medical attendants, study, transit and other notified categories. Travellers should use the official Indian e-Visa portal to confirm whether their nationality and trip qualify.
Applicants generally need a passport valid for at least six months when applying, enough funds, and a return or onward ticket. Each traveller needs an individual passport. Diplomatic and official passport holders cannot use the e-Visa facility.
Attari does not mean Pakistani e-Visa access. The official portal says Pakistani passport holders and certain foreign nationals of Pakistani origin must apply for a regular visa through an Indian mission. So, adding Attari Road changes the authorised checkpoint list, not the nationality rules. It should not be read as a blanket restoration of India-Pakistan passenger travel.
Why The Expanded Land Border Network Is Significant
India’s e-Visa system has long been associated with airport arrivals. More land crossings now change trip planning for eligible travellers moving across South Asia instead of flying directly into Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru.
Several newly listed checkpoints connect India with Bangladesh, Bhutan and Myanmar, while Attari faces Pakistan. That can help eligible third-country travellers build regional itineraries without automatically returning to a major airport. Business visitors, students, medical travellers and tourists may also gain more routing options when their journey begins in a neighbouring country.
The policy also matches India’s wider work on land-border infrastructure. The Land Ports Authority of India says integrated land ports bring immigration, customs, border security and passenger facilities into coordinated border complexes. Extending e-Visa entry to more of these routes makes the digital visa programme less dependent on aviation.
Another number shows why checkpoint access now carries more weight for travel planning. The Home Ministry says roughly 78% of visas issued by India are electronic. As digital visas become the main route for many visitors, the number and location of immigration checkpoints become more relevant.
What Travellers Should Check Before Choosing A New Entry Point
A valid e-Visa does not allow entry through every Indian border post. Before booking flights, buses or a multi-country journey, travellers should check the latest authorised entry list on the government portal and make sure their ETA status shows “GRANTED”.
They should carry the passport used for the application and a copy of the ETA. If a new passport was issued after approval, the portal advises carrying both the new passport and the old passport linked to the ETA. Travellers should separately check transport availability and the neighbouring country’s exit rules, because an Indian immigration approval does not automatically guarantee that every cross-border route is operating normally.
