Why Is Your CIBIL Score Low Despite Paying Every EMI on Time? Seven Possible Reasons

A low CIBIL score despite timely EMIs can reflect high card balances, recent credit enquiries, older payment issues, or errors on your latest credit report.

Key Highlights

  • CIBIL considers payment history alongside credit use, account age, and lender enquiries.
  • Since 1 July 2026, RBI rules specify four monthly reference dates for lenders’ credit reporting.
  • A recent payment and a wrong entry call for different checks. Start with the account’s Date Reported.

When a loan EMI leaves your bank account on schedule, the debit is evidence of that payment. It tells you little about the balance your card issuer reported or an older loan marked as settled. Open the Accounts and Enquiries sections of your CIBIL report to see what the score is drawing on.

Card Balances, New Applications and Credit History

  1. High credit card utilisation: A reported balance of ₹40,000 on a card with a ₹50,000 limit means 80% of that limit is in use. Even if you pay the bill by its due date, the issuer may already have reported a high balance. Check the balance and limit shown on the report.
  2. Several credit applications in a short period. A lender may pull your report when you apply for a card or loan. Several recent lender enquiries can weigh on the score, even when your existing EMIs are current. Look at the lender names and dates in the Enquiries section.
  3. A short credit history. Someone six months into a first loan has fewer months of reported repayments than someone who has managed credit for years. CIBIL considers account age, so a run of timely instalments may take time to build a longer record.

Older Payment Issues and Shared Loans

  1. An older late payment or settlement. A late card payment can appear alongside a current loan with on-time EMIs. A past loan may also be marked Settled if the lender accepted less than the full amount owed. In CIBIL’s example, that label appeared on an older personal loan and led to an education loan rejection.
  2. A missed payment on a shared loan. If you jointly borrowed, co-signed, or guaranteed a loan, payment problems on that account may affect your credit record. Check the Ownership field and the payment history on shared accounts.

A Recent Payment or a Credit Report Error

  1.   The report is older than the payment. Compare the payment date with Date Reported. Under RBI’s 4 December 2025 amendment directions, the reporting reference dates are the 9th, 16th, 23rd, and last day of each month from 1 July 2026. Lenders submit data after those dates, so a payment may take time to appear.
  2.  An entry is wrong. A loan you never took, a duplicate account, or an incorrect overdue amount deserves a closer look. If a lender has reported a payment as late and your records show it was on time, identify the month and the account in your CIBIL dispute.

How to Check Your CIBIL Report and Dispute an Error

Start with your free annual CIBIL report. Compare the account entry with a statement, payment receipt, or closure letter before deciding what to raise.

What You SeeWhat to CheckWhat to Do
A recent payment is missingDate reported and the payment receiptConfirm when the lender sent its update
A paid-off loan still shows a balanceFinal statement and closure letterAsk the lender to check the balance and status
An unfamiliar loan or enquiryLender name, date, and ownershipContact the lender and dispute the entry promptly

Keep the complaint reference number. CIBIL checks disputed lender data with the institution that reported it. Under RBI’s compensation framework, eligible complaints about delayed credit information updates or corrections attract ₹100 per calendar day if the complaint remains unresolved beyond 30 calendar days from filing.

The RBI has also shared guidance on filing a grievance on X and keeping the reference number.

FAQs

Does checking my own CIBIL score lower it?

Checking your own CIBIL score leaves it unaffected. When you apply for a loan or card, a lender’s enquiry is recorded and may influence the score.

What does 000 mean in the payment history?

CIBIL’s Days Past Due field records how late a payment was. A value of 000 means it was on time, while 030 indicates 30 days late.

Can a short credit history show no score?

CIBIL may display NA or NH when there is little or no credit history. These labels indicate limited information for scoring, and lenders apply their own eligibility policies.

Is 750 a universal minimum for loan approval?

Lenders set their own eligibility criteria and decide how to use the score. A score of 750 may help, but approval depends on the lender’s wider assessment.

When can I approach the RBI Ombudsman?

First complain to the lender or credit bureau. You can escalate an eligible complaint after an unsatisfactory reply or if you receive no reply within 30 days.
