Vikram Sugumaran – The director who reflected Rural realism passed away at 47

Tamil filmmaker Vikram Sugumaran known for his underappreciated movies like ‘Madha Yaanai Koottam’ and ‘Ravana Kottam’ dies due to cardiac arrest.

Vikram Sugumaran, the director of ‘Madha Yaanai Koottam’ and ‘Ravana Kottam’ has unfortunately passed away after succumbing to a cardiac arrest on Monday. The 47 year old filmmaker suffered a cardiac arrest during a trip from Madurai to Chennai after narrating his story to a prospective producer for his next film, states Times of India

The death of filmmaker Vikram Sukumaran made headlines as celebrities and fans mourning the loss. Sugumaran was fearless and candid about showcasing the reality of rural life and the raw characterisation in his movies.

Who is Vikram Sugumaran?

Vikram Sugumaran was born in Ramanathapuram at Paramakudi and had early aspirations of becoming a director. He learned to test the waters under the expert eyes of director Balu Mahendra and later from director Vetrimaaran. He contributed as a dialogue writer in Vetrimaaran’s ‘Aadukalam’.

He then made his debut with ‘Madha Yaanai Koottam’, a clean debut film which dealt with layered narratives of rural caste divisions and familial conflicts. His focused writing and characterisation was refreshing from a debutant who also reflected the truthfulness in portraying regional storyline.

His next and unfortunately final film ‘Ravana Kottam’ starring Shanthanu Bhagyaraj and Anandhi released in 2023 and stayed true to his style and vision amid mid reception and lukewarm response. The movie also portrayed class and divisions of the society, dealing with the objectives of what the society deems high and powerful.

Vikram Sugumaran maintained his conviction and unwavering method of storytelling, one that is unique for his identity. His untimely death also triggered questions on unhealthy lifestyle and lack of health consciousness in aspiring individuals.
