Indian Brands mistaken as Foreign
Lakmé
The visionary J.R.D Tata and Simone Tata in 1952, founded Lakmé to reduce the reliance of foreign and luxury makeup brands in India. Started as an 100% subsidiary of Tata Oil Mills, Lakmé is named after the popular french opera Lakm. Now a sought after brand and almost a household one in India, it is also a competitor in the International market.
Louis Phillipe
Owned by Madura Fashion and Lifestyle, this international apparel brand was launched in 1989. The European name comes from the french king Louis Phillipe and is now a standard luxury men’s clothing brand in India.
Monte Carlo
Founded in 1984 in Ludhiana, Monte Carlo is known today for their Men’s and Women’s clothing but began its journey for their high quality woolen products. The Italian name was chosen for the reason of India’s fascination and attraction towards foreign fashion but is purely based in India’s Nahar Group.
Peter England
England but India? The brand was founded in the UK in 1889 later became a trademark name under India’s Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail today. Once again the name remained thanks to India’s obsession and choosing of foreign sounding names while the brand is hugely available across India.
La Opala
Indians love high end tableware at an affordable price, although we rarely use it.
