8.8 Earthquake shook Russia : 10 Countries warned of Tsunami in the Pacific Coast

A high magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on 29 July, triggering Tsunami warnings in the country and across the Pacific Coast. The 8.8 Magnitude earthquake resulted in Tsunami warnings in the West Coast of the US and prompted immediate evacuation in the coastal areas in Hawaii.

The earthquake was severe and recorded around 7:24 PM ET, about 78 miles east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said in its updated assessment. The earthquake was said to be shallow and reportedly 12 miles deep. 

Hawaii was bracing for a Tsunami warning with waves expected to reach 10 feet high as authorities have urged and advised residents and tourists in Hawaii to move to safer, higher lands from the coastal areas. 

“You can expect a tsunami wave to hit the state, and it will not just hit one beach,” Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said at a news conference. “It will wrap around the islands.” 

Post the recorded Earthquake in the Russian coast, the tsunami advisory was turned to be a Tsunami warning for the coastal areas of California, from Cape Mendocino to the Oregon-California border. Coastal areas of Alaska from Samalga Pass to Attu, at the western end of the Aleutian Islands, and Hawaii were also notified of a serious inundation warning. 

The Russian coast in the town of Severo-Kurilsk in Russia’s Sakhalin region faced a fourth wave of Tsunami this morning as residents and authorities recall the third wave made serious damage and caused disruptions while the fourth was weak. “The most serious was the third wave, which did a lot of damage. It damaged the port infrastructure; the entire small fleet was pulled out to sea, it is now hanging around in the strait, some of the ships were washed ashore,” the mayor of the Severo-Kurilsk region, Alexander Ovsyannikov said, reports Al Jazeera.
