Kolkata is on the brink of a major transport revolution with the full-scale launch of the East-West Metro Corridor (Green Line) on August 22, 2025. This highly anticipated development will connect Salt Lake Sector V in the east to Howrah Maidan in the west, covering a total distance of 16.6 km across 17 stations.
Most notably, it includes Indiaโs first underwater metro tunnel beneath the Hooghly River and the deepest metro station at Howrah.
This launch marks the integration of two previously disconnected sections, creating seamless travel for lakhs of daily commuters. The Green Line will run 180 daily services, with trains every 8 minutes during peak hours and 10โ15 minutes otherwise.

Operating hours will be from 6:35 AM to 9:40 PM, including Sundays. Ticket pricing is affordable, starting at just โน5 and maxing out at โน30 for the full route. This metro line is expected to drastically reduce travel time between Howrah and Salt Lake from over an hour to around 27 minutes, while enhancing the cityโs urban mobility infrastructure.
