The set of Emily in Paris turned somber on August 21, 2025, after the unexpected death of Diego Borella, a 47-year-old assistant director, during production of the show’s highly anticipated fifth season. Borella, who was hired locally in Venice as a third assistant director, collapsed around 7:00 p.m. while the team was preparing a final scene at the historic Hotel Danieli.
Emergency services arrived shortly after 6:40 p.m., and medical personnel on-site performed CPR, but their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful. Borella was pronounced dead at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Diego Borella was not just a technician on set, he was a multi-talented creative. Born in Venice, he had studied and worked across Rome, London, and New York, cultivating a deep understanding of visual storytelling. In addition to his film career, he was known for writing children’s stories and fairy tales, and was celebrated among colleagues for his kind demeanor, sharp eye, and love of art and literature.
Diego Borella Cause of Death and Immediate Impact
Although official autopsy details have not been released, those close to the production and emergency responders believe that Borella suffered a sudden heart attack. His passing stunned the cast and crew, halting filming as the team processed the loss.
Production was temporarily suspended in the wake of the tragedy. After a brief pause, the cast and crew resumed filming on August 23, continuing their work in Venice in what many described as a tribute to Borella’s contributions.
