Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani is confirmed to have been dead from the fatal crash along with 170 casualties. The tragedy that is dooming the country on Thursday grows darker as the Air India plane that was bound for London dips near the Ahmedabad airport and crashes onto the BJ Medical College Hostel this afternoon.
The Air Indian 171 flight that had 242 people on board including 230 passengers, 2 pilots, and 10 cabin crew members also had Politician Vijay Rupani, the 16th Chief Minister of Gujarat who served the position from 2016- 2021. The crash resulted in the death of over 100 people which also includes the former CM.
Vijay Rupani’s presence on the plane was confirmed by BJP state leader Bhupendrasinh Chudasama who spoke with the media. “Vijay Rupani was going to London by Air India flight. I am going to the city civil hospital to inquire about him”.
Another viral photo surfacing the internet also confirmed that politician Vijay Rupani on the Air India plane. The picture is a selfie of a woman on board which has the politician in the background. It is said that Rupani was intending to visit his family living in London when the fatal crash happened.
Ahmedabad Air India Plane Crash Casualties
The Air India 171 flight was assumed to have had technical fault several months ago and even had difficulty taking off from the Ahmedabad airport on Thursday. The plane crashed a few minutes after take off only to land in a civilian region.
The plane crashed into the BJ Medical College Hostel that at the time of the incident had 50 – 60 doctors in the building having lunch. The recent casualty count reports to have 170 casualties including 5 doctors from the hostel.
Reactions and Condolences
The Air Indian plane crash immediately became the headline no one wants to see. The massive tragedy was addressed by world leaders and celebrities voicing their thoughts and prayers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his thoughts in an X post saying, “The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin wrote to PM Modi and President Murmu regarding the crash and shared his sympathies.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky shared his thoughts and prayers and shared the following post.
