Former Sri Lankan Skipper Angelo Matthews to retire from Test Format : Ready to play his last game in white

Star All rounder and destructive player in whole, Angelo Matthews is ready to hang his whites career with one last test series against Bangladesh in Galle.

Tall, brisk and absolutely destructive on field, Sri Lanka’s Angelo Matthews has announced his retirement from Test cricket after stepping out in whites from 2009. The all rounder who also captained his national side for 34 tests, including the infamous win at Headingley in 2014.

The Sri Lankan cricketer has not been picked out in the XI for over a year but has announced his retirement after the Bangladesh Tour of Sri Lanka and has shared he is available for white- ball selection “if and when my country needs me”. With 119 appearances in the longer format, Angelo Matthews has sincerely given his best and beyond for his side. 

After a voluptuous 17 years playing in the Test crease, Angelo Matthews announced that he won’t be playing in the format after the Bangladesh series. He took it to his social media page sharing, “My dear friends and family, With a grateful heart and unforgettable memories. It is time for me to say goodbye to the most cherished format of the game, International Test Cricket!”. 

Angelo Matthews has been a fixed and reliable player for Sri Lanka, uplifting the team in need. He was the second Sri Lankan player after Sanath Jayasuriya to rock with both the bat and ball scoring 12000+ runs and taking 180+ wickets. Matthews is also the fourth most capped Sri Lankan player who has been a part of some of the most remarkable outings for his country, representing it in the international arenas. 

Making his debut against Pakistan in Galle, he is also planning to retire from the format from the same venue, also with the dry running test season for Sri Lanka which only has a test series in 2026. Matthews is the third most run scorer for Sri Lanka in the test career besides Kumar Sangakara and Mahela Jayawardane and averaging at 44.62 and 8167 runs in total.

“Whilst I bid adieu to the test format, as discussed with selectors I will remain available for selection for the white ball formats, if and when my country needs me. I believe this test team is a talented side with many future and present greats playing the game. Now seems like the best time to make way for a younger player to take the mantle to shine for our nation”, wrote Angelo Matthews in announcing his retirement.
