India’s newest mega road story is now live in Uttar Pradesh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 594-km access-controlled Ganga Expressway in Hardoi on April 29, 2026, calling it a new growth lifeline for the state. The project links Meerut with Prayagraj and is expected to cut travel time from nearly 10–12 hours to around 6–8 hours. The cost has been widely reported around ₹36,230 crore, though some reports earlier placed it near the ₹33,000-crore mark.
Ganga Expressway Route And Districts Covered
The Ganga Expressway starts near Bijauli village in Meerut and ends near Judapur Dandu in Prayagraj. It passes through Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Budaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh and Prayagraj. The six-lane corridor is expandable to eight lanes, which gives it space for future traffic growth.
The expressway is also planned as a business corridor, not only a fast road. Manufacturing and logistics zones along the route are expected to support trade, agriculture, tourism, MSMEs and industrial movement across western, central and eastern UP.
Toll Charges And Speed Limit
Toll will be distance-based. Reports citing UPEIDA-linked rates say two-wheelers, three-wheelers and tractors may pay around ₹1.28 per km. Cars, jeeps and light motor vehicles are expected to pay around ₹2.50 to ₹2.55 per km. Light commercial vehicles may pay around ₹4.05 per km, while buses and trucks may pay around ₹8.20 per km.
For a full Meerut-Prayagraj car trip, the toll is estimated near ₹1,515, though some reports mention that final payable figures may vary with operational discounts. The top speed for light vehicles has been reported at 120 kmph.
Main Exit Points And Public Facilities
Key access points include interchanges near Meerut, Hapur, Amroha, Sambhal, Budaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh and Prayagraj. In the Moradabad belt, reported interchange points include Hasanpur, Sambhal and Chandausi.
The corridor is expected to include rest areas, food plazas, medical support, fuel stations, EV charging points, CCTV monitoring and emergency facilities. This makes it useful for long-distance passengers, freight operators, pilgrims travelling towards Prayagraj and businesses moving goods across UP.
Can Army Fighter Jets Land On Ganga Expressway?
Yes. The Ganga Expressway has a 3.5-km emergency airstrip in Shahjahanpur district. It is meant to support emergency take-off and landing by Indian Air Force aircraft. Reports say nearly 250 cameras have been installed around the airstrip area for monitoring.
