What do “karat” ratings mean
- 24K (24 carat) gold is the purest form (~~99.9% gold). It is soft by nature. It is used mostly for investment purposes or making jewellery pieces where softness can be tolerated.
- 18K (18 carat) contains 91.7% gold along with other metals as alloys. It is used for making jewellery in India.
- 14K (14 carat) contains 58.3 % gold with more alloy content. It is more durable, costs less and is used for fashion and everyday wear jewellery.
The price per gram drops with a lower karat because there is pure gold in the piece.
