What do โ€œkaratโ€ ratings mean

  • 24K (24 carat) gold is the purest form (~~99.9% gold). It is soft by nature. It is used mostly for investment purposes or making jewellery pieces where softness can be tolerated.
  • 18K (18 carat) contains 91.7% gold along with other metals as alloys. It is used for making jewellery in India.
  • 14K (14 carat) contains 58.3 % gold with more alloy content. It is more durable, costs less and is used for fashion and everyday wear jewellery.

The price per gram drops with a lower karat because there is pure gold in the piece.

Recent Trends & Why Prices Are High

  • According to recent reports, gold (99.9% purity, which is like 24K) has reached record highs in some cities in India โ€“ over Rs 1,16,000 per 10 grams in places like Delhi.
  • The demand is given a boost during festivals like Navratri when people buy more jewellery. Demand pushes prices up.
  • Global factors: Various factors like U.S. Federal Reserve expectations, U.S. dollar strength or weakness, and inflation data all affect gold globally and eventually in India.
  • Local costs: Import duties, local taxes (GST, etc.), transportation, and jewellerโ€™s markup influence how much more we have to pay above the base metal price.
