Kannada Literature left with a Void: Poet HS Venkatesha Murthy passes away at 80

Modern yet conventionally classic Kannada poet HS Venkatesha Murthy passed away at the early hours of Friday due to health reasons.

Kannada poet HS Venkatesha Murthy, known for his fluidity and conventional writing through multiple social and literary movements, passed away at 7 AM on Friday. Aged 80, HSV is a prominent figure in the Kannada literary space, now left the earthly life leaving a distinctive legacy. 

Making his debut literary piece in 1968 with the poetry collection titled ‘Parivrutta’, HSV started from the Navya movement or the modernist movement and surged through several movements till recently. Born in Hodigere village, Channagiri taluk in Davanagere, HS Venkatesha Murthy was later appointed as a Kannada Professor at the St. Joseph’s College of Commerce, Bengaluru, in 1973. 

With a fluid genre and form of writing, HSV wrote poetry, drama, essays, novels, children’s literature, translation and criticism. Notable works under his name include Kriyaaparva, Onamarada Giligalu, Eshtondhu Mugilu, Americadalli Billuhabba, Naditeeradalli, Uttarayana and Kannadiya Surya, Vaidehi and other poems.

As a playwright, HSV is pulled through different narratives and structures adding his own perspective and style. Plays like Agnivarna, Chitrapata, Uriya Uyyale, Manthare, and novels such as Tapi, Amanusharu, Kadiranakote, Agnimukhi, and Vedavati Nadiyalla.

With more than 100 books under his name in the Kannada language, HSV’s plays are enacted and adapted in Scotland, Antarctica and other countries with his children’s stories famous among the Kannada audience. He is also a part of the ICSE syllabus for class 9 and 10.
