India pulled out of upcoming Asia Cup 2025 – BCCI Announces

Defending Champions are now stepping away from the upcoming Asia Cup Tournament due to political conflicts following the escalation between India - Pakistan.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is now looking to cancel Indian Men’s Cricket Team’s participation in the biennial Asia Cup 2025. The reason for the defending champions for stepping away from the tournament is due to the political escalation between India and Pakistan.

The BCCI has also decided to stay away from all Asian Cricket Council (ACC) events for now and has also announced for the Women’s Team to withdraw from the Asia Cup 2025 that is set to happen in Sri Lanka, the coming month as well. The decision comes weeks after the fatal attack in Pahalgam and the subsequent escalation of attacks between the two countries.

The Indian Cricket board’s source with Indian Express revealed that India will now be associating with a Asian Cricket Council which is headed by Pakistan’s Mohsin Naqvi who is also the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman. The decision was briefed by a BCCI source as, “The Indian team can’t play in a tournament that is organised by the ACC whose chief is a Pakistan minister. That’s the sentiment of the nation. We have verbally communicated to ACC about our withdrawal from the upcoming Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup, and our future participation in their events too is on hold. We are in constant touch with the Indian government”, reports Indian Express.

While the India’s Men’s Cricket are refrained from participation this also means the venue of Asia Cup 2025 is doubtful as India was supposed to host in September. Another major drawback for the tournament includes the sponsorship for the tournament along with the Broadcast rights are now under question.

Several big sponsors for the Asia Cup are from India and the Broadcast Rights was bought by Sony Pictures Networks India for $ 170 Million for a period of 8 years, which will lead for the contract to be amended.

The broadcast rights and revenue will also cut a 15% share among the big five of the ACC – India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, while the rest will be apportioned among the associates and affiliates.

It is to be noted that Jay Shah the current ICC Chairman was the former ACC head and even though the ICC is the global body, the Asian Cricket Council formed to create a more powerful Asian body in Cricket and to develop the sport in the sub-continent.
