Indian Army Receives First Apache AH-64E Helicopters from Boeing: Cost, Delivery Schedule & Past IAF Deal Details

Boeing delivers its first three Apache AH-64E helicopters to the Indian Army

The Indian Army has received its first dispatch of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters from American aerospace company Boeing. The three helicopters were delivered on Tuesday and constitute the first of six under the contract to supply these weapons systems to India, bolstering India’s defence modernisation efforts.

What Is the Total Cost of the Deal?

In 2017, the Ministry of Defence approved a total of six Apache helicopters for the Indian Army at a cost totaling INR 4,168 crore, including associated weapon systems. These helicopters have good precision strike capabilities, night operations capability and advanced avionics all of which are a vital weapon system in modern warfare.

When Will the Remaining Helicopters Be Delivered?

According to the initial delivery schedule, the six Apache helicopters will be delivered by the end of 2024. With three helicopters delivered, the delivery is scheduled to be completed as planned. The new fleet will enhance the Army’s offensive and tactical air capabilities dramatically.

How Does This Build on the Indian Air Force’s Previous Deal?

This is the first time that the Indian Army is inducting Apache helicopters. The Indian Air Force was previously the recipient of 22 Apache AH-64Es under a multi-billion dollar deal under separately negotiated contract in 2015, from the IAF, Boeing and the US government. In 2020, that delivery was completed.

How Apache AH-64E Helicopters Boost India’s Battlefield Power?

The AH-64E Apache is advertised as one of the most capable multi-role attack helicopters in the world. The US Army has already been using the Apache for anti-armor missions, armed reconnaissance and close air support (CAS) in near-zero weather limits.

With this delivery, the Indian Army kicks off a new chapter in its air combat capability.
