First Women Armed Force Officers to Debrief – Who are Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh?

Indian armed forces launched ‘Operation Sindoor’ in the early hours of 7 May, as a return act of defence and retribution for the Pahalgam Attack.

For the first time ever, an Indian Armed attack debrief included two woman officers – Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh along with India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. The two women officers not just debriefed about the ‘Operation Sindoor’ but also were involved in the planning and execution of the attack. The two female officers involved in the operation that was named after answering for the widowed women who lost their loved ones in Pahalgam.

Colonel Sophia Qureshi, aged 35 is an officer in the Indian Army working in the Corp’s signals, who made history as the first woman officer to lead an army training contingent in a large multinational exercise. In association with ASEAN nations, she commanded the training contingent ‘Exercise Force 18’ in 2016 in Pune. 

Colonel Sophia Qureshi has also led peacekeeping operations and Humanitarian Mine Actions. Hailing from a Gujarati family of armed force officers, including her grandfather and her husband who is an officer in the Mechanised Infantry. 

Wing Commander Vyomik Singh is a valiant fearless helicopter pilot in the Indian Air Force. She was also part of the Indian Air Force’s all women tri services mountaineering team which climbed Mount Manirang in Himachal Pradesh in just 15 days, according to Times Now. She has also registered over 2,500 flying hours and has been involved in multiple rescue operations like the one in 2022 in Arunachal Pradesh.

Both the women have showcased ultimate valour and strength at some of the toughest operations in unimaginable terrains and weather. Them being chaired in this debrief also detailing about the planned and focused attack is a major step towards recognising the under appreciated and unsung heroes of the nation.
