India’s Golden boy from Panipat has waved the nation’s flag with pride several times at the International podiums, bringing accolades for his people. Now in a calm evening at Doha Diamond League as Neeraj Chopra with just a wry smile and a simple head nod carried out an historic throw that will place him in the elite club in Javelin history.
Neeraj Chopra finally hit the 90 metre mark on Friday at the Doha Diamond League after consistently crawling towards the phenomenal throw, even coming close at the Stockholm Diamond League where he recorded 89.45 metres. Lausanne Diamond League Final gave him a centimetre more, edging his record even closer.
It finally happened in Doha as the Olympic Gold Medalist threw a neat and impressive run that led to a flight landing across the field, striking the 90 metre line, leaving Neeraj Chopra unbelievable as his actions spoke and his contemporaries congratulating him.
An historic throw indeed that puts him among the short 90 metre club in Javelin history as the 25th athlete. The athlete known for consistently recording 88 – 90 metres nagged him with a question of when the 90 metre throw could happen. His groin injury and the following recovery recently slightly lifted the pressure off of him for Doha, which ironically brought him the achievement of 90.23 metres as projected on the digital board.
Commendable collaboration with the Czech coach Jan Zelensky, a legendary world record holder himself who brought in a more balanced post throw posture after brake and release for Chopra. Aimed at joining the club from 2016, Neeraj Chopra has seen his record metre throw surpassed on Friday by the German thrower Julian Weber who struck at 91.06 metres.
Neeraj after the remarkable throw said, “I know I can throw better. And I will, this year. I wanted to see the path to 90m. Now that I’ve seen it, I’ll get better. I was consistently throwing 88, 89. I’m confident that I can now consistently throw 90 and beyond.”
Doha Diamond League has certainly ignited the competitive spirit in Men’s Javelin and has raised the stakes that is no longer tied to the 90 metre mark. Neeraj will also be feeling the pressure of defending the World Championship title in September
