The nominations at the 98 th Academy Awards have rewritten history, with the supernatural thriller Sinners by Ryan Coogler getting 16 nominations, the most ever in the history of the Oscar Awards, becoming one of the biggest Entertainment Updates of the year. This is the highest ever recorded in the history of 14 set by Titanic, La La Land and All about Eve. As Hollywood rejoices over this historic milestone, the country did not have much to cheer about as its inaugural submission, Homebound, did not even make it to the final category of the Best International Feature Film. The nomination has prepared a highly competitive awards ceremony in March, where Coogler will have a masterpiece that is genre-defying, and the lack of Indian representation.
Sinners 16 Nominations Rewrite History
Sinners by Ryan Coogler has managed to reconfigure the awards world in general, cleaning up most of the major categories including the Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor in a dual role by Michael B. Jordan. The overwhelming nature of the film confirms that the Academy has come to embrace the genre films, and more importantly, they have recognized Delroy Lindo as a supporting actor and Wunmi Mosaku as a supporting actress. By earning Sinners 16 nominations, Warner Bros. has positioned the vampire thriller as the undisputed frontrunner of the Oscars 2026 season, overwhelming competitors like Paul Thomas Andersonโs One Battle After Another.
Indiaโs Homebound Exits the Competition
Homebound is a social drama by Neeraj Ghaywan that failed to break in to the top five in spite of the tremendous buzz it created at festivals. Directed by Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, the movie was a firm contender in the shortlist, but eventually lost out to the competitors in Norway and Brazil. As Homebound exits the race, the wait for Indiaโs next nomination continues, leaving fans disappointed but proud of the film’s global journey.
