Elon Musk’s dispute with Mukesh Ambani over satellite internet in India has reached Reliance Industries’ doorstep. On 16 October 2026, the company publicly rejected the suggestion that it feared competition from SpaceX’s Starlink, saying Jio’s satellite service was also awaiting government clearances.
Musk has accused powerful Indian business interests of delaying Starlink’s entry. The government disputes that allegation. Neither Starlink nor Jio’s satellite venture has yet secured permission to start commercial service.
Key Highlights
- Reliance responded to Musk’s criticism on 16 October 2026.
- Starlink, Jio Satellite Communications and Eutelsat OneWeb hold telecom licences, but still await security clearance.
- Spectrum assignment follows the security review; a licence alone does not permit a launch.
- Jio and SpaceX signed a Starlink distribution agreement in March 2025 despite their competing satellite plans.
How Did the Starlink-Jio Fight Escalate in October 2026?
Musk has argued that Starlink could connect Indian villages where ordinary broadband infrastructure is difficult to build. He has not publicly provided evidence that Reliance caused its regulatory delay.
The dispute developed over several days:
- 7 October: Musk alleged on X that unnamed Indian “oligarchs” were preventing Starlink from entering the market.
- 8–9 October: He questioned Ambani’s influence and later sarcastically addressed him as “Prime Minister Ambani”. His original X post is available to read.
- 16 October: Reliance issued its own statement on X, welcoming satellite competition, including Starlink, and insisting that all operators comply with Indian law.
Reliance also pointed to Jio’s expansion since 2016, claiming more than 530 million customers. That is its broader telecom customer figure, not a count of satellite internet subscribers.
Why Are Starlink and Jio Still Waiting to Launch?
There is an important distinction between a licence and permission to start selling connections. A 29 January 2026 Ministry of Communications disclosure named Starlink, Jio Satellite Communications and OneWeb among companies granted satellite telecom authorisations.
The next hurdle remains unfinished. In its 8 October clarification, the ministry said all three were undergoing security assessments. Only after that stage could an operator seek spectrum assignment. It described their regulatory positions as broadly similar and rejected claims that the process was discriminatory.
Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia also rejected the suggestion of a protected monopoly. Airtel chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal entered the discussion on 14 October, arguing his company had applied years earlier and was still waiting. Their remarks underline why a telecom licence alone cannot open the market.
Why Are Spectrum Rules and Jio’s Starlink Deal Important?
Before this month’s public quarrel, spectrum was the main disagreement. Reliance had argued for auctioning satellite frequencies, while Starlink favoured administrative assignment.
The Telecommunications Act, 2023 provides for administrative assignment for specified satellite services. TRAI subsequently published recommendations on commercial satellite spectrum terms on 9 May 2025.
Auctioning and assigning spectrum administratively are different decisions from authorising a particular company to launch.
Their commercial relationship is more surprising. On 12 March 2025, Reliance announced an agreement with SpaceX. It proposed selling Starlink hardware through Jio stores and helping customers arrange installation, subject to authorisation.
That agreement did not erase Jio’s separate ambitions in satellite broadband. Nor does it prove the arrangement has been cancelled because the executives are now trading accusations.
What Could the Rivalry Change for Internet Users in India?
The strongest case for satellite internet is not replacing every cheap mobile data plan. It is connecting a remote household, school or business where fibre installation or mobile coverage is unreliable. Satellite terminals need equipment, power and a usable view of the sky, which changes the economics for customers.
There is still no verified nationwide Indian Starlink retail tariff or confirmed commercial launch date. Musk has promised affordable pricing, but a pledge is not a published subscription plan. Jio’s existing fibre and AirFiber offers should not be mistaken for its unreleased satellite product.
Three questions will shape costs:
- Monthly cost: Is the quoted amount for service alone, or are taxes and equipment charges separate?
- Availability: Does the provider cover the exact village or premises, rather than merely advertising nationwide ambitions?
- Performance: What speeds, interruptions, and installation requirements apply at that location?
Official clearance and spectrum assignment, rather than more X posts, will determine launch. Follow the Department of Telecommunications for official authorisation information.
Is Starlink available in India in October 2026?
No commercial launch has been approved as of 16 October. Starlink has a satellite telecom licence, but security clearance and spectrum assignment remain outstanding for commercial operations.
Has Jio blocked Starlink from entering India?
Musk has made that allegation, but offered no public proof. Reliance denies resisting competition, and the government says security checks apply to all three licensed operators.
Will Starlink be cheaper than Jio in India?
No reliable comparison is possible yet. Musk has promised affordable plans, but neither Starlink’s final India tariffs nor Jio’s satellite broadband prices have been confirmed.
Are Jio and Starlink partners or competitors?
Both. Their March 2025 agreement proposed Starlink equipment sales through Jio, while Jio also has its own separate satellite venture awaiting permission to operate commercially.
What must happen before satellite internet services launch?
The government says licensed operators must complete security assessments, then obtain spectrum assignment. Commercial availability also depends on the provider completing its operational and customer arrangements.
