The Centre has deferred Census 2027 house-listing in Manipur, which was scheduled to begin on September 1, 2026, following protests, court proceedings and demands from several civil groups for an NRC exercise before the Census. The deferment has placed the state’s Census timeline on hold while the debate over citizenship verification, population data and representation continues.

Census 2027 will no longer record “beggars and vagrants etc.” as a separate category under non-economic activity. People who previously fell under this classification will instead be included under “others”. The change comes with India’s first fully digital Census and comprehensive caste enumeration since Independence.
