WhatsApp has moved another payment task inside its app in India. From September 3, 2026, users began getting access to a new Bill Payments section that can fetch and pay electricity, gas, water and other bills without sending them to a separate banking or utility app.
The rollout is powered by Bharat Connect, the network earlier known as the Bharat Bill Payment System. Meta says the service connects WhatsApp users with 22,722 billers across 30 categories. The feature is being released in phases, so some users may see it before others.
What Has WhatsApp Added For Bill Payments In India?
The new WhatsApp bill payments feature sits inside the ₹ Payments area on the home screen. After choosing a category and provider, users enter the account information required by that biller. WhatsApp then fetches the available bill, shows the amount due and lets the user select a payment method.
According to Meta’s official announcement, the rollout covers much more than monthly power bills. It also adds one place for users who handle several household or family payments.
- Electricity, gas and water bills can be fetched and paid inside WhatsApp.
- FASTag, insurance, credit card and loan repayments are among the supported categories.
- Multiple accounts under the same provider can be saved for home, office or family use.
- Past payments and upcoming bills can be viewed from the Payments Home section.
The feature is not limited to UPI. Meta says users can choose UPI, debit cards or credit cards where available. That gives WhatsApp a broader payments role than simple person-to-person transfers.
How Can Users Pay An Electricity Or Gas Bill On WhatsApp?
A user first opens WhatsApp and taps the ₹ icon at the top of the home screen. From there, the Bill Payments option shows available categories. After selecting electricity, gas or another service, the user chooses the biller and enters details such as a consumer number, customer ID or registered phone number.
Once the bill is fetched, the amount and account information appear for review. The user then selects UPI, a debit card or a credit card and confirms the payment. A completed transaction can later be checked in payment history.
WhatsApp’s India Payments Terms say biller details are used to fetch bills, process payments, issue receipts and support complaints. Users can also remove a saved biller if they no longer want future bill fetches or reminders.
The new feature is a payment interface, not the electricity board or gas company itself. If the bill amount looks wrong, WhatsApp advises users to check with the biller before paying.
Why Is WhatsApp Pushing Further Into Everyday Payments?
Bill payments are the latest step in WhatsApp’s payment expansion in India. In April 2026, the company added prepaid mobile recharges for Jio, Airtel and Vi. WhatsApp already supports UPI transfers, while metro ticketing and government service chatbots have brought more daily tasks into the app.
The timing comes as UPI reaches another high. India processed 24.51 billion UPI transactions worth ₹29.82 trillion in August 2026, according to August 2026 UPI transaction data. A government update marking UPI’s tenth anniversary said annual transaction volume crossed 24,162 crore in FY2025-26.
That scale helps explain why large consumer apps want payments closer to where people already spend time. For WhatsApp, utility bills can bring repeat monthly use rather than an occasional transfer.
The change may also help people who currently jump between bank apps, utility websites and payment platforms. Still, WhatsApp is entering a crowded field that already includes banks, UPI apps and dedicated bill-payment services.
What Should Users Check Before Paying Bills On WhatsApp?
The main check is simple: confirm the provider, consumer number, bill amount and due date before approving payment. WhatsApp’s terms also say convenience fees or internet handling charges may apply in some cases and should appear before payment is completed.
Users must be at least 18 and use an Indian phone number to access WhatsApp Pay in India. Transaction delays, reversals or biller-side problems can still happen, so keeping the receipt is useful until the payment appears on the provider’s account.
Unexpected payment links in chats should be treated carefully. The safer route is to open the ₹ Payments section directly, select the biller and review the fetched amount. A UPI PIN is entered only when authorising a payment, not when receiving money. WhatsApp also states on its official Payments page that it does not store users’ UPI PIN information.
The rollout will continue across Android and iOS over the coming weeks. If the Bill Payments option is missing today, it may simply not have reached that account yet.
