Why did all 50 Pakistani cricketers go unsold in The Hundred Draft?

50 Pakistani cricketers remained unsold in The Hundred Draft which was surrounded by controversy due to IPL influence, poor performances and PCB’s financial problems.

In a shocking turn of events, all 50 Pakistani players including 45 men and 5 women remained unsold in the recent Hundred Draft. Top players like Naseem Shah, Shadab Khan and Saim Ayub who were assigned to high value categories did not receive any bids. Naseem and Shadab were valued at GBP 120,000, while Ayub was valued at GBP 78,500. Women cricketers like Aliya Riaz, Fatima Sana and Yusra Amir also remained unsold.

There could be several reasons for this disappointing result. Indian Premier League (IPL) owners’ presence in the Hundred Craft may have impacted team choices since four IPL teams have stakes in Hundred franchises. The poor recent white ball form shown by Pakistani players may also have kept potential bidders away.

Administrative problems also came into play with Naseem Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi having trouble getting No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) last year, restricting their participation.

At the same time, the PCB is also in a financial crisis, cutting domestic match fees from 100,000 to 10,000 rupees which is raising questions about the future of the game. The board has also cut down players’ accommodation and air travel, further deteriorating the condition for domestic cricketers.

This lack of interest in Pakistani cricketers and financial instability is a reflection of long standing issues in Pakistan’s cricketing world.
