The situation gained notoriety after Grok made surprising comments about Prime Minister Modi of India, asserting that opposition leader Rahul Gandhi was “more honest” and had “better formal education”. The chatbot also noted that Modi’s interviews seemed “scripted” which also upset Modi’s supporters. While critics of the ruling BJP rejoiced in Grok’s blunt responses, right wing users attempted to call Grok’s supposed biases into account by questioning it about Congress and Gandhi.

Outside of the political sphere, Grok’s off the cuff responses have become viral, entertainingly engaging with cricket fans, Bollywood aficionados and even the Delhi police. Nevertheless, due to its unfettered content, the chatbot’s unmediated tone has come under scrutiny from India’s IT ministry which is said to be in talks with X about Grok’s “controversial responses.”

Musk’s lighthearted reaction suggests he is unfazed but whether Grok will remain unrestrained in India remains uncertain.
