How to Check Whether Your Vehicle Meets BS-VI Standards: Registration Details, Emission Rules and Delhi Entry Restrictions Explained

Check the emission norm on your Registration Certificate or VAHAN record to confirm whether your vehicle meets BS-VI standards. If the entry is missing, the manufacturer’s Form 22 provides another way to verify it. A valid pollution certificate alone does not establish the BS category.

Delhi’s winter entry restrictions began on 1 November 2026. Motorists travelling into the capital need to establish both their vehicle’s emission category and its eligibility under the applicable restrictions.

Key Highlights

  • Find the BS category through the RC, VAHAN or Form 22.
  • Check Delhi’s rules for vehicles registered outside the capital.
  • Renewing a PUC does not override an emission-category restriction.

How to Check Your Vehicle’s BS-VI Status

Look for “Emission Norms”, “Bharat Stage” or a similar field on the RC. An entry reading “Bharat Stage VI” identifies BS-VI compliance. “Bharat Stage IV” identifies BS-IV. Some physical RC formats do not display this information prominently.

For an online BS-VI vehicle check, open the government’s VAHAN vehicle-details service:

  • Choose “Know Your Vehicle Details”.
  • Complete the required sign-in or user registration.
  • Enter the vehicle registration number and verification details.
  • Find the emission norm in the vehicle record.

The Odisha Transport Department’s access instructions explain the national service’s registration and verification steps. An incomplete record needs further checking; it should not be treated as confirmation of either standard.

Ask for Form 22 if the RC or online entry leaves the question unresolved. This manufacturer-issued document records the emission norm and identifiers such as the chassis number.

What BS-VI Means and Why a PUC Is Different

Nationwide BS-VI requirements took effect on 1 April 2020, as confirmed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The registration year offers a clue, but the record for the individual vehicle is better evidence.

Use each document for the question it actually answers:

RecordInformation to Check
RC or VAHAN entryRecorded Bharat Stage category
Form 22Manufacturer-certified emission norm
PUC certificatePollution-test result and certificate validity

Passing a pollution test does not upgrade a BS-IV car to BS-VI. An outstation BS-IV diesel car with a fresh PUC therefore still faces restrictions aimed at its emission category.

Delhi Entry Restrictions From November 2026

Petrol and diesel vehicles registered outside Delhi that fall below BS-VI face the winter entry restriction from 1 November 2026 to 31 January 2027. CNG, electric and specifically exempted vehicles are treated separately, subject to the applicable conditions.

Enforcement has already started. Hindustan Times reported that 7,279 vehicles were checked between midnight and 8 pm on 1 November, with 714 turned back at Delhi’s borders.

The Delhi Traffic Police advisory posted on 29 October also flags invalid PUCCs and non-compliant interstate buses. BS-VI status does not replace the need for valid pollution documents where required.

Goods operators have separate rules to check:

  • Transitional entry permission for outside-Delhi BS-IV goods vehicles ended on 31 October 2026.
  • Permitted cleaner categories include BS-VI diesel, CNG, LNG and electric goods vehicles.
  • Trucks bound elsewhere must use peripheral expressways rather than pass through Delhi.

A private car and a goods vehicle should not be assessed against the same entry rule. Registration location and vehicle class both affect eligibility.

What Drivers Should Check Before Travelling

Restrictions under GRAP also vary by stage. CAQM’s revision announced on 29 September 2026 extended Stage III restrictions on BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers to Sonipat, alongside the existing NCR districts covered.

A Delhi number plate does not exempt a vehicle from every GRAP restriction. Permission to enter Delhi and permission to drive along a particular NCR route require separate attention.

Before departure, match the recorded BS category to the rule covering your vehicle. Check PUC validity where required and read the latest traffic advisory. If records disagree, approach the registering RTO and keep the supporting documents available during the journey.

FAQs

Is a valid PUC certificate proof that my vehicle is BS-VI?

Passing a pollution test does not change the vehicle’s certified Bharat Stage category. A BS-IV vehicle remains BS-IV even after receiving a fresh, valid PUC certificate.

Are all vehicles registered in 2020 BS-VI?

The year is only a clue. BS-VI requirements took effect nationwide on 1 April 2020; the vehicle’s RC, VAHAN entry, or Form 22 provides confirmation.

Can an outstation BS-IV car enter Delhi with a new PUC?

A fresh PUC does not make an outstation BS-IV petrol or diesel car eligible under the winter restriction. Only a notified exemption would change that position.

What if my RC does not show the emission norm?

Give the authorised dealer or manufacturer the chassis number and request documents confirming the emission standard. If official records conflict, ask the registering RTO about correcting the vehicle record.

Do electric vehicles need to meet BS-VI entry requirements?

Electric vehicles are exempt from the announced BS-VI entry restriction. Their registration, insurance and other applicable requirements still apply; exemption from one restriction does not replace those obligations.
