Why Did MS Dhoni Bat at No. 9? Experts Weigh In on CSK’s Tactics

One of the biggest talking points of the latest ipl match between CSK vs RCB was MS Dhoni’s unexpected batting position at No. 9.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost by 50 runs against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at Chepauk, their first home defeat to RCB in 17 years. One of the biggest talking points for the match was MS Dhoni’s unexpected batting position at No. 9. The decision raised eyebrows with many former players and fans left questioning if CSK’s tactics made sense.

In pursuit of a total of 197, CSK faltered against RCB’s impressive and professional bowling unit and found themselves reduced to 80-6 by the 13th over. Though Dhoni scored 30* from only 16 balls which displayed how quickly he could have accelerated, it was argued that his earlier batting may have changed the match’s outcome.

Former cricketer Robin Uthappa expressed his displeasure on social media by saying, “Dhoni coming at No. 9 didn’t make sense at all.” Irfan Pathan also lambasted this decision arguing that CSK had made a mistake in holding their best finisher back.

A possible motivation for CSK prioritizing MS Dhoni as a lower order batter may have been the net result of his fitness or intentional planning to finish strong in the match. Unfortunately, the plan ultimately did not work for CSK as they struggled to keep up with the required run rate.
