In a July 23, 2026 update published by the Press Information Bureau, DoT said more than 88 lakh suspicious mobile connections identified through its ASTR analytics system had been disconnected after failing re-verification as of July 15.
The same PIB update on measures against cyber fraud said 50.90 lakh mobile connections had been disconnected following analysis based on 11.18 lakh suspected-fraud reports submitted by citizens through Sanchar Saathi’s Chakshu facility.
DIP is used for sharing fraud-related telecom intelligence with stakeholders, including cybercrime authorities and financial-sector entities. This gives the stricter SIM-count checks a wider fraud-prevention role rather than making them only a customer-onboarding change.
