ChatGPT users in India may now notice something new below an AI response: a sponsored placement. OpenAI launched ChatGPT Ads in India on August 27, 2026, bringing advertising to logged-in adults using the Free and Go plans. The company says the paid placement will remain separate from the answer itself.
The rollout arrives after months of testing in other countries. It also puts India near the centre of OpenAI’s push to turn ChatGPT into an advertising platform without putting ads inside generated responses. For users, the biggest questions are simple. Who sees the ads, what data is used, and can a brand pay to influence an answer?
Who Will See ChatGPT Ads In India?
The first group affected is logged-in adults on ChatGPT Free and ChatGPT Go. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts remain ad-free under OpenAI’s current rules. Accounts identified as belonging to people under 18 are also excluded from the ad programme. The eligibility rules are explained in OpenAI’s Ads in ChatGPT Help Center.
OpenAI says ads may appear where the programme is active, while eligibility can vary during a phased rollout. Free users also have another option: they can choose an ads-free version of the Free plan, but that comes with lower message limits and reduced access to some tools.
What users should know at a glance:
- Free and Go users may see sponsored placements.
- Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu remain ad-free.
- Accounts identified as under 18 do not receive ads.
- Temporary Chats do not show ads.
- Free users can remove ads by accepting lower usage limits.
India is a large market for ChatGPT. TechCrunch’s report on the India rollout noted that OpenAI had said in February that ChatGPT had more than 100 million weekly active users in the country. That scale gives the company a sizeable audience for its next advertising test.
How Will Sponsored Content Appear In ChatGPT?
OpenAI says ads can appear below the end of a ChatGPT response when there is a relevant sponsored product or service. The ad carries a sponsored label and is visually separated from the answer. It is not inserted into the response as though ChatGPT itself recommended the advertiser.
That distinction is central to the launch. Under OpenAI’s advertising rules, ads and answers operate separately, and advertisers cannot pay to shape, rank or alter what ChatGPT says. OpenAI also states that a paid placement should not be treated as an endorsement of the brand or product.
The India launch is already drawing interest from marketers. The Economic Times’ India launch report says WPP and Omnicom are OpenAI’s first agency partners in India, with more than 50 brands intending to go live this week. A self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager is scheduled to open in India on September 4, with daily campaign budgets starting at ₹725.
This follows a fast international expansion. OpenAI began its US ad test in February and later expanded beyond America. Ads had reached the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea by August 11, before OpenAI announced another rollout covering 31 European markets on August 18.
What Happens To Chats, Privacy And Ad Controls?
OpenAI says advertisers do not receive a user’s chats, chat history, memories, name, email, precise location or other personal details. Advertisers receive aggregated performance information, such as total ad views or clicks.
Ad selection can still use information kept inside ChatGPT. Depending on settings, that may include the current conversation, general location or language, interactions with previous ads, and past chats or memory when personalised ads are switched on. Users can manage these options through Ad Controls.
Users can turn off ad personalisation, delete ad data, hide an ad, report it or check why it appeared. Turning personalisation off does not remove advertising altogether. It mainly changes which signals ChatGPT can use to choose a relevant sponsored placement.
OpenAI also says ads are not eligible to appear beside sensitive or regulated conversations involving topics such as personal health, mental health or politics. Temporary Chats remain ad-free.
Why Is India Important For OpenAI’s Ad Push?
India has already played an early role in OpenAI’s lower-cost strategy. ChatGPT Go first launched in India in August 2025 before expanding worldwide in January 2026. Ads now give OpenAI another revenue route while keeping Free and lower-cost access available to a much larger audience.
For advertisers, the format is different from a normal search page or social feed because the placement can arrive after a longer conversation. For users, though, the test will be judged on whether the separation between answer and advertisement stays obvious as more brands join.
