India’s human spaceflight plan is no longer centred on one crewed mission. ISRO is now working toward a chain of milestones: the first uncrewed Gaganyaan flight in late 2026, an indigenous crewed mission by 2027, the first Bharatiya Antariksh Station module in 2028 and a five-module station by 2035. That gives the agency less than a decade to move from proving orbital crew transport to operating a permanent research platform in low Earth orbit.
The timetable is ambitious because human-rated launch hardware, life support, recovery, docking, orbital operations and crew training all have to mature together.

Gaganyaan Is Now The Starting Line, Not The Finish
The latest government update on Gaganyaan says the Human Rated Launch Vehicle has completed development and ground testing of its propulsion stages and structures. ISRO has also developed or tested major elements of the orbital module, Crew Escape System, avionics, thermal protection and recovery infrastructure. The first uncrewed Gaganyaan mission carrying Vyommitra is currently targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026.
That flight is critical because India needs more than a successful launch. ISRO must prove the full mission sequence, from ascent and orbital operations to re-entry, parachute deployment and sea recovery, before putting astronauts aboard an Indian spacecraft. A crewed Gaganyaan mission is targeted for 2027.
The programme has also grown. Its revised scope now covers eight missions and a total provision of ₹20,193 crore, including precursor work for the Bharatiya Antariksh Station.
Why The Jump From Gaganyaan To BAS Is So Large
A short crewed mission and a space station share technologies, but a station demands far greater endurance. BAS will need reliable docking, power management, environmental control, robotics, crew quarters, in-orbit servicing and experimental facilities that work for long periods.
ISRO has completed the baseline design review and system engineering for BAS-01, with subsystem design under way. The first module is expected to cost about ₹1,763 crore for development and launch during 2025-2028. The full station is planned as five modules.
Docking is one area where India has already made visible progress. The SpaDeX mission demonstrated docking in January 2025, undocking in March and a second docking followed by power transfer in April. ISRO’s official SpaDeX post on X also linked the technology directly with future lunar missions and construction of BAS.
Gaganyaan therefore cannot be treated as an isolated prestige flight. Each mission has to feed operational knowledge into the station programme.
Shubhanshu Shukla And SpaDeX Have Already Shortened The Learning Curve
India gained direct crewed-orbit experience through Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla’s Axiom-4 mission to the International Space Station in 2025. He spent 18 days aboard the ISS and completed seven ISRO-coordinated microgravity experiments. ISRO later said the mission provided experience in training, mission protocols and research operations relevant to Gaganyaan.
The science pipeline is also being prepared before BAS exists. Through IMEx-2026, ISRO invited Indian researchers to propose microgravity experiments that could eventually fly in low Earth orbit, including aboard the future station. A space station needs a steady research programme, not hardware alone.
The next pressure point is cadence. A station assembled through multiple launches requires ISRO to move from occasional human-spaceflight demonstrations to repeatable operations. Launch vehicles, mission control, astronaut training, recovery teams and industrial suppliers will all need a higher tempo.
Can ISRO Reach A Fully Operational Space Station By 2035?
It is possible, but the schedule leaves little room for long gaps. BAS-01 is due in 2028, only about a year after the targeted first crewed Gaganyaan mission. The remaining modules, docking demonstrations, long-duration life-support work and station operations then have to mature through the early 2030s.
The wider roadmap raises the stakes. India is developing a Next Generation Launch Vehicle and has set a goal of landing an Indian astronaut on the Moon around 2040. BAS therefore acts as a bridge between short missions around Earth and deeper human exploration.
The fastest path is not simply launching more often. ISRO must turn each flight into repeatable operating capability, expand industrial manufacturing and keep testing life support, docking and recovery until they become routine. If Gaganyaan proves India can send people safely to orbit, BAS must prove India can keep them there, work there and return them reliably.
