Is GPT-6 Free? ChatGPT Plans and Model Access Explained

Yes, GPT-6 is becoming available on the free version of ChatGPT. OpenAI started rolling it out to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users on October 7, 2026, and expanded the rollout to Free and Go users on October 8. Free and Go accounts receive GPT-6 Luna, while paid ChatGPT plans use GPT-6 Sol in the main Chat experience.

OpenAI says ChatGPT now reaches more than 1.2 billion people each week. Because the rollout is gradual, some Free accounts may not show GPT-6 immediately even though the expansion has begun. OpenAI’s GPT-6 rollout announcement.

Key Highlights

  • GPT-6 begins reaching ChatGPT Free and Go users from October 8, 2026.
  • Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna; paid ChatGPT plans use GPT-6 Sol in Chat.
  • ChatGPT Plus remains $20 per month.
  • GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra, is reserved for eligible Pro, Business and Enterprise users.
  • Free and Go users get unlimited everyday text chats, while separate limits apply to tools such as files, images, voice and data analysis.

Is GPT-6 Free on ChatGPT Now?

For ordinary ChatGPT use, yes. Open AI’s October 7 report says the GPT-6 rollout expands to Free and Go tiers from October 8. That access is powered by GPT-6 Luna, the faster, lower-cost model in the family.

The model name alone does not tell the whole story. A Free account showing “GPT-6” is not receiving the same access as GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6 Pro or Astra.

For Free users, the practical picture is:

  • GPT-6 Luna is being added to regular Chat.
  • Everyday text chats are unlimited, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards.
  • Files, images, voice and data analysis keep separate limits.
  • Medium, High and Extra High paid reasoning levels are not part of Free access.

That distinction is important when people compare results from two accounts. Both may say GPT-6, while the underlying model tier and available reasoning controls differ.

How ChatGPT Plans Change GPT-6 Model Access

ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month and receives GPT-6 Sol in Chat as the rollout reaches paid users. Plus also offers higher limits and broader reasoning access than Free. OpenAI separately says Plus includes GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex, but not Astra-powered GPT-6 Pro in ordinary Chat.

OpenAI now lists Pro 100 at $100 per month, Pro 200 at $200 and Pro 500 at $500. GPT-6 Pro, powered by Astra, is available on Pro 100 and Pro 200, while Pro 500 adds Astra Ultrafast and the highest included usage among Pro tiers.

For teams, ChatGPT Business Standard costs $25 per user monthly, or $20 per user monthly with annual billing. Premium costs $125 monthly, or $100 with annual billing. Business and Enterprise can also access GPT-6 Pro, depending on workspace permissions.

GPT-6 Luna, Sol and Astra Are Not the Same Thing

OpenAI has made GPT-6 a model family rather than a single model experience. Luna targets speed and economical everyday use. Sol is the stronger general model for paid ChatGPT plans. Astra is positioned for demanding professional work and powers GPT-6 Pro.

The new rollout also introduces Intelligent UI. GPT-6 can combine text with diagrams, forms, buttons, charts and small interactive tools instead of always returning a standard text response.

Before paying, match the plan to the job:

  • Stay on Free when GPT-6 Luna and everyday chats cover the workload.
  • Consider Plus for GPT-6 Sol, higher limits and stronger reasoning access.
  • Consider Pro when GPT-6 Pro or heavier professional use justifies the cost.
  • Use Business when a team needs central billing, workspace controls and security features.

A timely example is the rollout itself. A Free account checked on October 8 may still show the older experience while another already has GPT-6 Luna. OpenAI is releasing access gradually, so the model picker remains the best account-level check.

What Should Users Check Before Upgrading?

The better question is not only “Is GPT-6 Free?” but which GPT-6 version a plan includes, where it works and what limits surround it. Chat, Work, Codex and the API follow different access and billing rules. API usage, for example, is billed separately from ChatGPT Plus

Is GPT-6 completely free to use?

Yes. GPT-6 Luna is rolling out to ChatGPT Free users, while stronger GPT-6 variants, higher reasoning levels and heavier usage remain tied to paid plans

Which GPT-6 model do Free users get?

Free and Go accounts receive GPT-6 Luna in Chat. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise accounts receive GPT-6 Sol in the regular Chat experience instead globally.

Does ChatGPT Plus include GPT-6 Astra?

Plus includes GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex, but Astra-powered GPT-6 Pro in regular Chat requires eligible Pro, Business or Enterprise plan access.

How much does ChatGPT Plus cost?

ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month. It adds GPT-6 Sol, broader model access, higher limits, advanced reasoning and expanded tools compared with Free accounts overall.

Why can’t I see GPT-6 on my Free account yet?

OpenAI is using a staged rollout. Some Free accounts may receive GPT-6 Luna later than others even after the October 8 rollout has officially started.
