6G in India: What Comes After 5G and When Could Consumers Actually Use It?

India is already talking seriously about 6G even as 5G coverage keeps expanding. At India Mobile Congress 2026 in New Delhi, the government repeated its goal of securing at least 10% of global 6G patents and standards. Reliance Jio also showed a pre-6G stack and Giga MIMO radio.

That does not mean a 6G icon is about to appear on phones. Global standards are still being written, spectrum plans are evolving and commercial networks are expected closer to 2030.

Key Highlights

  • India is targeting at least 10% of global 6G patents and standards.
  • ITU is developing 6G under the IMT-2030 framework, with final standards expected around 2030.
  • Jio displayed a pre-6G stack and Giga MIMO radio at IMC 2026.
  • India is funding a 6G terahertz testbed and has published a spectrum roadmap.
  • Early consumer access is more realistic around 2030, followed by wider availability later.

Why 6G Will Be More Than a Faster Version of 5G

5G brought higher mobile broadband speeds, lower latency and support for far more connected devices. 6G is being designed around a wider mix of communication, AI and sensing.

The International Telecommunication Union’s IMT-2030 work covers six usage scenarios, including immersive communication, hyper-reliable low-latency links, massive communication, ubiquitous connectivity, AI integrated with communication, and integrated sensing and communication. Its 2026 technical work includes 20 minimum performance requirements.

Some proposed capability ranges are striking: peak data rates of roughly 50–200 Gbps, user-experienced rates of 300–500 Mbps or more, radio latency as low as 0.1–1 millisecond and positioning accuracy of 1–10 cm. These are technical targets, not promised everyday phone speeds. Better coverage, smoother cloud AI, richer XR and more precise location services could prove more noticeable than download figures.

India’s 6G Push Has Moved From Vision Papers to Testbeds

India launched the Bharat 6G Vision in 2023, but the programme is now deeper into research, spectrum planning and international standard-setting. By July 2026, the Bharat 6G Alliance had 90 members and seven working groups. The government is backing a three-year terahertz testbed involving SAMEER Kolkata and three IITs.

At the 3rd International Bharat 6G Symposium on October 8–9, 2026, the Alliance exchanged five new MoUs with global organisations. DoT’s official X account also highlighted the symposium’s five MoUs and 10 released white papers and reports.

Jio added an industry example at India Mobile Congress 2026 by demonstrating its pre-6G stack and Giga MIMO radio, while saying India could be among the first countries to launch commercial 6G after global standards are finalised.

A high-data-rate line-of-sight link from India’s 6G terahertz testbed was already demonstrated at IMC 2025C 2025.

When Could 6G Actually Reach Indian Consumers?

The likely answer is around 2030 for the first commercial phase, not 2027 or 2028.

  • 2026 | Rules are still forming: ITU experts completed draft 6G performance requirements and evaluation guidelines, while 3GPP continues Release 20 studies.
  • 2027–2029 | Candidate technologies move into evaluation: ITU has invited IMT-2030 radio-interface proposals during this period, and 3GPP’s Release 21 is expected to carry normative 6G work.
  • Around 2030 | First commercial launches become plausible: ITU’s process points to final 6G technology standards by the end of the decade. India wants to be in the first wave, but availability will still depend on spectrum, network investment, devices and operator rollout plans.

Consumers may first see 6G in large cities, enterprise zones, campuses or specialised networks before it becomes common on mainstream smartphones.

What 6G Could Change First for Indian Users

The first benefits may appear where 5G still faces limits.

  • Coverage: integrated satellite and terrestrial connectivity could help remote areas, transport routes, islands and disaster zones stay connected. ITU has identified satellite-to-device connectivity as an important part of networks moving towards 2030.
  • AI services: AI-native networking could reduce delays for cloud assistants, live translation and machine-to-machine applications.
  • Devices and pricing: early 6G phones are likely to arrive only after standards and chipsets stabilise. Affordable mass-market hardware may take longer than the first network launch.

India already has nearly 5.6 lakh 5G base transceiver stations across every district, according to the government. That infrastructure, plus 5G-Advanced upgrades, could form part of the bridge to 6G.

When will 6G launch in India?

Commercial 6G services are most likely around 2030, after global standards mature. Limited trials and pre-commercial demonstrations are expected earlier across research, enterprise and telecom networks.

Will existing 5G phones support 6G?

Most current 5G phones will not become full 6G devices through software alone. New radio hardware, chipsets and antennas will likely be required for 6G bands.

How fast could 6G be?

ITU’s IMT-2030 work includes peak-rate targets around 50–200 Gbps in some scenarios, but actual consumer speeds will depend on spectrum, coverage, devices and network conditions.

Will 6G replace 5G immediately?

No. 5G and 5G-Advanced will continue operating while 6G expands gradually. Operators are likely to run multiple network generations together for many years after launch.

What should consumers do before 6G arrives?

Consumers do not need to delay a phone purchase for 6G today. Track official DoT, ITU and operator announcements as standards, spectrum and device timelines become clearer.
