Indian Railways cancelled over 100 train services as Cyclone Arnab disrupted travel across Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and connecting routes, according to reports published on October 27.
For anyone travelling on October 28, find the notice for the correct train number and departure date. A cancellation on one day does not establish what happens to the next departure.
Key Highlights
- October 27 reporting put cancellations above 100 services.
- Changes include cancellations, revised departures, and shortened journeys.
- Some announced cancellations extend into November.
- NTES and railway helpline 139 provide train-related updates.
Cyclone Arnab Train Cancellations: Which Services Face Disruption?
The Indian Express reported more than 100 cancellations on October 27. The report also described rescheduling and shortened services, so the headline total reflects only part of the disruption.
Affected journeys reach beyond coastal stations. The reported cancellations include the Secunderabad–Howrah, Rourkela–Jagdalpur and Howrah–Jagdalpur services. Travellers starting inland therefore need to check their bookings too.
Earlier railway announcements listed these cancellations:
| Train Number | Service | Announced Cancellation Dates |
| 18515 / 18516 | Visakhapatnam–Kirandul Night Express, both directions | October 29–November 4 |
| 58538 | Visakhapatnam–Koraput Passenger | October 27–30 |
| 58537 | Koraput–Visakhapatnam Passenger | October 28–31 |
| 18512 | Visakhapatnam–Koraput Intercity | October 30 |
| 18511 | Koraput–Visakhapatnam Intercity | October 31 |
These dates refer to departures from the originating station. The reported railway cancellation notice provides the individual entries.
This table is a selection, rather than the complete cancellation register. Notice how the Koraput passenger trains have different date ranges in opposite directions; one route name alone cannot identify the affected journey.
How To Check The Full List Before Leaving Home
Open the official National Train Enquiry System, which provides Train Exception Info alongside running-status and schedule tools. Match the five-digit train number against your ticket.
- Use Train Exception Info to look for cancellations, rescheduling, or diversions affecting your service.
- Match the train number and applicable journey date with the railway notice.
- Recheck the service before leaving for the station; call 139 if the notice leaves your boarding arrangements unclear.
South Central Railway’s October 27 passenger advisory also directed travellers to IRCTC and RailOne. It said reserved passengers would receive service-change messages on the mobile numbers supplied during booking.
An old screenshot can omit a later change. Read the current railway entry before making travel arrangements.
Rescheduled, Diverted Or Cut Short: What Changes For Your Journey?
A disruption notice does not always cancel the whole service. Read the operational change carefully.
- Rescheduled: The railway changes the departure time. Confirm the revised timing for your boarding station.
- Diverted: The train follows another route. Confirm whether it still calls at your boarding and destination stations.
- Short-Terminated: The train finishes before its usual destination.
- Short-Originated: The train begins at a different station, leaving out the earlier part of its route.
For example, the announced changes to the Bhubaneswar–Jagdalpur Hirakhand Express, train 18447, end the journey at Rayagada for departures from October 27–30. The corresponding notice starts train 18448 from Rayagada on October 28–31.
A Jagdalpur booking therefore needs more investigation than a departure-time check. Ask the railway which portion of the booked journey the revised service will actually cover.
Refunds And The Next Step For Ticket Holders
IRCTC’s published refund rules provide automatic fare refunds for e-tickets when Railways cancels the entire train. Passengers do not need to cancel those e-tickets or file a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR).
Diversions and shortened journeys follow separate provisions. For the listed diversion-related claims, IRCTC sets a TDR deadline of 72 hours after scheduled departure at the passenger’s boarding station. A train terminating short has a different deadline tied to scheduled arrival at the destination.
Confirm the recorded disruption before selecting a refund reason. Open NTES with your train number now, establish whether your booked section operates, then use the applicable IRCTC refund provision.
FAQs
When will normal train services resume?
Railway notices give cancellation dates for individual services. They do not establish one network-wide restart time, so confirm your specific departure rather than assuming every route reopens together.
Does a cancellation cover the return train too?
Not necessarily. Outward and return trains carry different numbers and may have different cancellation dates. Look up the return service separately, even when both share a name.
What if I have not received a railway SMS?
A missing SMS does not confirm that your train will run. The railway advisory also directs passengers to NTES, RailOne and 139 for current service information.
Does a diversion mean my train has been cancelled?
No. A diverted train follows a different route and may still operate. Your boarding or destination station could lose service, so inspect the revised route before travelling.
Can I claim a refund for a long delay?
If your train runs more than 3 hours late and you do not travel, IRCTC requires an online TDR before actual departure to claim the full fare.
