How to Check Cancelled and Diverted Indian Railway Trains Online Before Travelling

A confirmed railway ticket does not guarantee that the train will follow its original route. Cancellations, diversions and shortened journeys can leave passengers at the wrong station, sometimes after they have already started travelling.

Indian Railways provides updates through the National Train Enquiry System (NTES), the RailOne app and helpline 139. These services help passengers check cancelled and diverted trains before leaving home.

Recent disruptions on the Visakhapatnam–Kirandul route show why checking the train number and journey date is worth doing, even with a confirmed reservation.

Key Highlights

  • NTES provides information on cancelled, diverted and rescheduled trains.
  • Passengers can check whether a cancellation affects the entire route or only part of it.
  • RailOne combines train enquiries, ticket booking and PNR services.
  • Fully cancelled trains qualify for automatic refunds on eligible e-tickets.
  • Railway helpline 139 provides an alternative when online services are unavailable.

How to Check Cancelled and Diverted Trains on NTES

The National Train Enquiry System is operated by Indian Railways through the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS). Its cancellation and diversion information is separate from ordinary train-running updates.

Follow these steps:

  1. Open the official NTES website.
  2. Select Cancelled Trains to see services marked as fully or partially cancelled.
  3. Choose the relevant date and locate your five-digit train number.
  4. Open Diverted Trains to find services operating on changed routes.
  5. Use Rescheduled Trains if the departure time may have changed.
  6. Open Spot Your Train to review the latest running position and expected arrival at your station.

A small detail can confuse. For an overnight service, the date on which the train started its journey may differ from the date printed for your boarding station. Use the correct running instance.

The Ministry of Railways reported in August 2026 that NTES processes more than 6 crore enquiries daily and handles approximately 80,000 concurrent users.

RailOne offers another route for mobile users. As of August 2, 2026, the app had recorded 4.76 crore downloads, with average daily bookings of around 10 lakh tickets.

Cancelled vs Diverted Trains: What Recent Railway Updates Show

Cancellation and diversion are not interchangeable. A cancelled train does not operate over the affected journey, while a diverted service follows another route and may skip scheduled stations.

A partial cancellation is different again. The train may operate normally up to a specified station and stop there.

For example, South Coast Railway’s October 19 advisory, reported on October 21, announced the following changes for the Visakhapatnam–Kirandul route:

Train NumberAnnounced ChangeAffected Dates
18515Visakhapatnam–Kirandul Express cancelledOctober 21–28, 2026
18516Kirandul–Visakhapatnam Express cancelledOctober 21–28, 2026
18447Bhubaneswar–Jagdalpur service terminates at KoraputOctober 21–28, 2026
18448Jagdalpur–Bhubaneswar service originates from KoraputOctober 22–29, 2026

The changes were detailed in the October 21 railway disruption report.

Someone booked from Bhubaneswar to Jagdalpur on train 18447 cannot assume the train will reach Jagdalpur simply because part of the service is operating.

An earlier official South Coast Railway X update on September 24 also reported cancellations and shortened journeys following a landslide on the KK railway line.

These incidents show why checking the affected stations is as necessary as checking the train number.

What Happens to Your Ticket When a Train Is Cancelled or Diverted?

Refund treatment changes depending on whether Indian Railways cancels the complete train or alters only part of its journey.

Under the IRCTC refund rules, the main arrangements include:

  • Fully cancelled train: Eligible confirmed and RAC e-tickets receive automatic fare refunds. Passengers do not need to cancel the ticket or file a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR).
  • Diverted train: Passengers who do not travel because of the diversion may file a TDR within 72 hours of the scheduled departure from their boarding station.
  • Counter ticket: Automatic online refunds do not apply in the same way. Passengers generally need to approach a railway reservation counter for the applicable refund procedure.

Refund claims involving diversions are subject to railway rules and verification. A diversion alone should not be treated as confirmation that every ticket qualifies for a full refund.

There is also a separate provision for trains running more than three hours late. An eligible passenger who does not travel must file the online TDR before the train’s actual departure to claim the applicable full refund.

When travel plans change unexpectedly, RailMadad and helpline 139 provide official assistance.

What Should I Do If NTES Is Not Working?

Call the railway enquiry number 139 for train-running information. Station enquiry counters are another option, particularly when online updates are inaccessible shortly before your scheduled departure time.

Before Your Journey: Open NTES shortly before heading to the station. Verify the train number, correct date, boarding station, and latest operational changes. A previous day’s cancellation notice may not apply to your journey.

FAQs

Can I Check Cancelled Indian Railway Trains Without a PNR Number?

Yes. NTES provides cancellation information using train details and dates. A PNR is useful for checking an individual reservation, but is not required for cancellation lists.

How Can I Find Out Whether My Train Has Been Diverted?

Open the Diverted Trains section on NTES and locate your service. Review the changed route carefully, particularly whether your boarding or destination station is being skipped.

Does IRCTC Automatically Refund Tickets for Cancelled Trains?

Eligible e-tickets receive automatic refunds when the entire train is cancelled. Partial cancellations and diversions may require a TDR, depending on the circumstances and railway rules.

Is RailOne the Official Indian Railways App?

Yes. Launched in July 2025, RailOne is an official Indian Railways application offering ticketing, PNR enquiries, train information, and passenger support through a single platform.
