Ahmedabad will host the World Weightlifting Championships 2029, bringing the senior competition to India for the first time. The International Weightlifting Federation’s Executive Board awarded the event at its meeting in Ningbo, China, on October 25, 2026, according to Akashvani News.
The decision adds a global weightlifting championship to Gujarat’s calendar ahead of the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The hosting announcement confirms the city and year, while leaving the competition dates and venue for later announcements.
Key Highlights
- India will host the senior World Championships for the first time.
- Ahmedabad receives the 2029 edition; Moscow gets 2030.
- Gujarat previously staged Commonwealth and Asian weightlifting championships.
- The announcement does not include ticket prices or booking dates.
World Weightlifting Championships 2029: The Hosting Decision
The IWF’s October 25 announcement awards four championships across different age groups. Ahmedabad’s allocation concerns the senior Worlds, which distinguishes it from the youth and junior competitions announced alongside it.
The confirmed allocations are:
| Year | Championship | Host City |
| 2028 | World Youth Championships | Prishtina, Kosovo |
| 2028 | World Junior Championships | Caracas, Venezuela |
| 2029 | Senior World Championships | Ahmedabad, India |
| 2030 | Senior World Championships | Moscow, Russia |
These are separate championships rather than sessions within one tournament. Readers following India’s hosting announcement should therefore look for the 2029 senior event, rather than the 2028 junior competition.
All India Radio News also reported the decision on X, identifying Ahmedabad as India’s first host of the senior edition. Its announcement names Ningbo as the location of the Executive Board meeting.
Gujarat’s Recent Weightlifting Record And The 2030 Connection
Gujarat has already welcomed international weightlifting teams, although the earlier competitions differed in reach and location:
- Ahmedabad, 2025: The city staged the Commonwealth Senior, Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championships at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex.
- Gandhinagar, 2026: The Asian Senior Weightlifting Championships took place at Mahatma Mandir and concluded on May 17.
Keeping those locations separate avoids a common error in coverage. Ahmedabad will host the 2029 Worlds, while neighbouring Gandhinagar hosted the 2026 Asian competition. An earlier tournament’s venue does not establish where organisers will stage the new event.
The Asian Weightlifting Federation’s closing report records 10 medals for India at the 2026 championships, comprising 1 silver and 9 bronze. It also documents senior and junior world records during the competition, giving Gujarat recent experience of hosting performances at that level.
The next major connection is the Commonwealth Games. Commonwealth Sport formally confirmed Ahmedabad, also known as Amdavad, as the 2030 host on November 26, 2025. Weightlifting forms part of its core sports programme. The two events have separate organisers and competition arrangements; spectators will need event-specific information for each.
Competition, Tickets And What Spectators Should Watch Next
For newcomers, the total on the scoreboard provides a useful starting point. Weightlifting combines the athlete’s best successful snatch with their best successful clean and jerk.
Mirabai Chanu’s 2025 World Championships silver offers a concrete example. The Indian Weightlifting Federation records an 84 kg snatch and 115 kg clean and jerk, producing a 199 kg total in the women’s 48 kg category in Førde, Norway. Those figures describe that competition, not an entry or target for 2029.
Anyone planning to attend Ahmedabad should wait for two practical announcements:
- The session timetable: This will identify when particular weight categories compete.
- The venue and ticket arrangements: These will establish where spectators need to travel and how admission works.
The IWF’s hosting release does not provide those details. It also does not name the Indian squad, so a familiar athlete’s previous participation cannot confirm their appearance in Ahmedabad.
India has secured the championship; organisers must now turn that allocation into a published competition plan. Follow the IWF announcement and subsequent federation updates before making event-specific bookings.

The IWF has confirmed Ahmedabad and the year 2029. Its hosting announcement does not specify competition dates, so spectators must wait for the detailed event calendar.
