Students can get an education loan without collateral in India through bank products or PM-Vidyalaxmi, depending on the institution, admission route, and amount they need.
For students who already have a loan, there is a date to watch. The PM-Vidyalaxmi portal notice says financing banks can submit eligible FY 2025–26 interest subsidy claims through 31 December 2026. Applicants can confirm with their branch that the bank has submitted the claim. The date applies to that year’s subsidy claims. New loan applications follow a separate process.
Key Highlights
- SBI’s standard student loan allows up to ₹7.5 lakh without collateral, with a parent or guardian as co-borrower.
- PM-Vidyalaxmi covers merit-based admissions to designated Indian institutions.
- Select bank products allow higher unsecured amounts, depending on the institution and course.
Who Can Get an Education Loan Without Collateral?
Collateral is an asset pledged to the lender, such as property. A co-borrower signs the loan and shares responsibility for repayment. The ₹7.5 lakh figure often comes up because it is the collateral-free threshold in SBI’s standard Student Loan Scheme. The same bank sets a different limit for students admitted to institutions on its Scholar Loan lists.
| Loan Route | Who It Covers | Collateral-Free Amount |
| SBI Student Loan | Indian nationals with admission to an eligible course | Up to ₹7.5 lakh with a parent or guardian as co-borrower |
| SBI Scholar Loan | Students admitted to eligible courses at listed Indian institutes | Up to ₹50 lakh for List AA institutes with a co-borrower. Other lists have lower limits. |
| PM-Vidyalaxmi | Merit-based degree or diploma admissions at designated Indian institutions | Based on eligible course costs and bank appraisal |
Take a ₹9 lakh request. It exceeds the unsecured threshold on SBI’s standard product. A student at an eligible List AA institute could ask the same bank about a Scholar Loan for that amount.
How PM-Vidyalaxmi Eligibility and Interest Support Work
The Ministry of Education’s scheme rules cover merit-based admission to designated Quality Higher Education Institutions. Management quota seats are excluded. Families at any income level can apply if the student meets those rules. PTI covered the Cabinet’s approval when the scheme was announced in November 2024.
The government’s 75% credit guarantee applies to eligible loans of up to ₹7.5 lakh. It protects the lender against part of a default. Students remain responsible for repaying the loan. A July 2026 government update recorded 1,12,817 PM-Vidyalaxmi loans sanctioned through 21 July 2026.
Eligible students with annual family income up to ₹8 lakh can receive a 3% interest subsidy during the repayment holiday on up to ₹10 lakh of the loan, subject to scheme rules. The separate PM-USP interest subsidy covers the full interest during that period for eligible students in technical or professional courses in India with annual family income up to ₹4.5 lakh.
What Banks Check Before Approving an Unsecured Education Loan
A college may quote tuition in the offer letter and list hostel charges separately. Put both documents in front of the lender so the amount requested can be traced to the cost of the course. SBI’s application checklist shows the records a bank may ask to see.
- Admission and academic records. Keep the offer letter, fee schedule, and applicable marksheets or entrance results together. Include a scholarship letter if it changes the amount required.
- Co-borrower finances. SBI asks for six months of bank statements and different income documents for salaried and self-employed applicants. Banks may also review the co-borrower’s credit history when assessing the loan.
What to Check Before Accepting a Loan Offer
The bank’s Key Facts Statement shows the annual percentage rate, which helps compare offers with different fees. Ask whether unpaid interest during the repayment holiday will be added to the loan balance.
- Ask the lender how much the family must contribute towards the fees and when it will release each instalment.
- Find the date the first EMI is due and ask how the lender will handle any interest charged before then.
For studies abroad, SBI’s Global Ed-Vantage scheme offers separate terms for select institutions.
Start with the PM-Vidyalaxmi portal to check the exact campus and course, then ask the bank to identify the loan product it will use.
FAQs
Can a self-employed parent be a co-borrower?
A self-employed parent may qualify as a co-borrower. SBI’s checklist asks for the latest income tax returns and proof of the business address for such applicants.
Can the loan pay for hostel fees or a laptop?
PM-Vidyalaxmi can include eligible hostel costs and a reasonably priced laptop. The bank assesses those costs alongside tuition and other expenses linked to the student’s course.
Can a student get a collateral-free loan to study abroad?
SBI’s Global Ed-Vantage lists up to ₹50 lakh without collateral for select overseas institutions. Students can check the bank’s list against the university in their offer letter.
Can the bank approve less than the amount requested?
Yes. The bank may sanction a lower amount after reviewing eligible expenses and applying the product’s rules. Confirm the approved amount before committing to college fees.
Does interest stop during the repayment holiday?
Interest may accrue while EMIs are deferred. A subsidy can cover some or all of that interest if the borrower qualifies under the applicable scheme rules.
