QS Asia University Rankings 2027: How Are Indian Universities Ranked and Which Factors Affect Their Scores?

IIT Delhi remains India’s highest-ranked institution in the QS Asia University Rankings 2027, released on November 3, 2026. Several leading Indian institutions have slipped in position, but a lower rank does not necessarily mean a lower score.

QS combines indicators covering reputation, research, and international activity. For applicants, the useful detail lies in those individual indicators rather than the final position alone.

Key Highlights

  • IIT Delhi continues to lead Indian institutions.
  • India remains Asia’s second-most represented higher education system.
  • Academic and employer reputation together account for half the score.
  • Rank and score changes need to be read separately.

Where Do Indian Universities Stand in QS Asia 2027?

QS’s results analysis lists 325 Indian universities, including 34 new entrants. The full edition covers 1,722 institutions across 26 higher education systems, according to the QS release.

India’s five highest-placed institutions are:

  • IIT Delhi: 66th, compared with 59th in 2026.
  • IISc Bengaluru: Joint 79th, previously 64th.
  • IIT Bombay: Joint 83rd, previously 71st.
  • IIT Madras: 85th, previously 70th.
  • IIT Kharagpur: Joint 90th, previously 77th.

Those positions describe performance within Asia. They must not be presented as global ranks. Increased Indian representation also does not establish that every participating institution improved.

Which Factors Determine the QS Asia Scores?

The QS Asia methodology uses 11 indicators. Each contributes a specified share to the overall score.

IndicatorWeight
Academic reputation30%
Employer reputation20%
Faculty/student ratio10%
International research network10%
Citations per paper10%
Papers per faculty5%
Staff with a PhD5%
International faculty ratio2.50%
International student ratio2.50%
Inbound exchange students2.50%
Outbound exchange students2.50%

Reputation surveys therefore contribute 50% of the total. Academic reputation draws on academics’ assessments, while employer reputation draws on employers’ perceptions of graduates.

Research measures answer different questions. Papers per faculty measures publication output relative to academic staff; citations per paper assesses how often published research is cited. Publishing more papers does not automatically produce stronger citation performance.

Why Can a University Improve Its Score but Lose Rank?

Delhi University provides a specific example. Its overall score rose from 68.5 in 2026 to 70 in 2027, while its position fell from 95th to 106th, PTI reported, citing the university’s assessment.

The university reported better scores in nine indicators. Its papers-per-faculty score increased from 87.7 to 95, while academic reputation fell slightly from 91.1 to 90.8.

Rank records relative position. An institution may improve while competitors advance further or new institutions enter above it. The Delhi University example shows why a fall in position cannot, on its own, establish weaker performance.

Nor do all gains carry equal weight. A change in academic reputation affects a larger share of the composite score than the same indicator-score change in papers per faculty. The weighting explains why research productivity alone cannot determine the final result.

How Applicants Can Use the Rankings

Start with the institution’s indicator scores, then examine the course being considered. The Asia ranking is an institutional comparison; it does not replace evidence about a particular department.

For a shortlist, look at:

  • Course provision: Required modules, available facilities and who teaches the programme.
  • Career evidence: Department-level placement reports, including the year and number of graduates covered.
  • Costs and entry: Published fees, scholarship conditions and the actual admission requirements.

Employer reputation is a survey measure, so it cannot be read as an individual student’s probability of getting a job.

Use the official QS results table to compare institutions, then verify course details directly with each university. Follow India Focus Daily for education updates with the figures and their context explained.

FAQs

Which Indian institution ranks highest in QS Asia 2027?

IIT Delhi leads India at 66th in Asia, down from 59th in the previous edition. That position is regional and should not be described as its global rank.

When were the QS Asia University Rankings 2027 released?

QS published the Asia 2027 results on November 3, 2026. The edition year and publication year differ, so use the release date when checking news reports.

Are QS Asia and QS World University Rankings directly comparable?

The rankings cover different institutional groups and use adapted indicators and weights. A university’s regional position cannot be substituted for its place in the global table.

Does employer reputation show a university’s placement rate?

Employer reputation comes from a survey of graduate employers and carries 20% weight. It does not report the percentage of a department’s graduates who secured jobs.

Does a higher ranking guarantee admission or a suitable course?

A ranking does not establish admission eligibility or course suitability. Applicants still need the university’s entry requirements and details of the specific programme they intend to study.
